Combidex Nano MRI For Pelvic Node Mets?

Combidex is an iron oxide imaging agent that is injected and used with different scanning methods primarily to find lymph node Mets. It has been kicking around for a couple of decades and never gained traction in the US. The company filed for FDA approval in 2005, but never gained it. It has been available in several European countries and some PCa oncologists have sent patients overseas to get the scans that look for Mets.

In the late 1990’s there was a method developed called Prosta-Scint that used Combidex as the imaging agent. I know one man that was having trouble finding PCa after more than a dozen biopsies and steadily increasing PSA. He went to Amsterdam for the scan. At about the same time my urologist was a lead author on a study that showed Prosta-Scint was ineffective. Also about that time, the iron oxide was in very limited supply and the various companies looked for other agents to use.

NCBI has a paper from 2018 that describes the nano MRI that you reference. It basically says that Combidex is again of interest and companies are studying it. I am not aware of it being available in the USA.

I just saw that the company, SPL Medical, that owns the agent has renamed it Ferrotran and is conducting trials in Europe at Radboud University. Sounds like what you are reporting, Djin.

I have had the scan. As Prof Dr Barentz (sp?) explained to me during the infusion of the nono-iron, the company filing the FDA application did not even have a radiologist involved and made other errors. So Barentz had Radboud buy the rights ( a long, interesting story of that struggle).
