Hi guys, my name is Jeff and I’m Debralyn’s husband. Thanks for all the help and support you’ve given both of us through this forum. You’ve been amazing. It’s my first time logging in, and I’m glad to meet all of you.

I’m in my 5th day post-op and feeling good. The operation and the recuperation have gone much better than I ever imagined possible. I’ll have my catheter in until Monday, but not having any problem with it. Today I’m having some blood in my urine, but no pain or discomfort. Hoping it will pass by later in the day.

Thanks again for your help and support and glad to meet you.

Jeff, from the information I was sent home with after surgery, if you're getting blood in your urine you should increase your fluid intake. During the bladder healing process you need to drink a pretty large amount of fluid s.

We found this group after my husband's surgery more than 8 years ago, and continue to be amazed at how helpful, knowledgeable and supportive the people here are. Total strangers helping each other out with first hand experience and "been there, done that" knowledge. Best wishes on your recovery. Sounds like you're on your way.

Thank you, Rockin@57. I've been drinking a lot of fluids and I will drink more. Any thoughts on whether I should avoid things like coffee?

I was advised to avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol and limit tea and coffee. Since I wasn't sure what the "limit" was, I gave up coffee for a few weeks. Got to hate the taste of plain water so I got small packets of powdered drink mix. Crystal Lite, etc. Also drank cranberry and prune juice, which was for medicinal reasons only. I think the stuff is awful! Also had a little gatorade.

Jefff, good to hear from you directly. It's probably wise to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages as long as the catheter is in place--they can all irritate the bladder, and it is already plenty irritated. Water, gatorade, fruit juices are all good.

To gauge it, you should probably be filling up the bag every 3-4 hours during waking hours.

Jefff, You'll have the catheter in until Monday. I worried a lot about removing the catheter. I took mine out 7 years ago so I've forgotten exactly how the thing collapsed, but it did, and it was a simple process. I was standing in the shower and my wife was telling what to do and the catheter slid out on its own. You don't need to go the hospital or doctor's office. Glad you're doing good.

For me, I had staples across my belly, so the staple removal and catheter removal happened at the same visit.

Jeff, your wife is a keeper. Remember, no one has missed their appointment to have their catheter removed. Continued good luck.

I mean, really people.

Jeff I know the uro will have told you this but DO NOT TRY THIS (catheter removal at home). It WILL be a Foley balloon catheter with a little branch upper-thigh level you hook on the strap and a red "dot" at the end. If not, say and I'll come up with some forfeit. On removal the nurse will attach a syringe to the branch and remove EXACTLY the amount of saline used to pump it up. In my case 10ml, about 1/2 oz. As discussed elsewhere, it is "entertaining" and we can all enjoy a bit of schadenfreude. But seriously it is soon over and as someone said, you don't miss that appointment.

Personally, I would lay off the Crystal Lite etc. (permanently, but especially now) given the bladder-irritant effect of artificial sweeteners. For me, particularly with aspartame, that effect is cumulative and extreme. YMMV but it is widely observed.

Thanks, I am doing that. I still have fairly significant blood in my urine, but I’m feeling good. Catheter comes out on Monday.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I really appreciate it. Things are going well, including bowels! Never thought I’d be so excited about that. The blood is still in my urine much of the time, but I’m not too worried about it. I’m drinking tons of water and following all directions.

I really appreciate all of you. I tried to answer posts individually, but there is a waiting period between posts that makes it difficult. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t even think of removing the catheter myself.

Sounds fairly normal, Jeff. The color of that blood should be getting a bit lighter.

I enjoyed having my MD remove my catheter, because I anointed him with some golden flow. Believe me, he deserved it.

Am I the only one wondering what duke48's wife was doing for him, in the shower, when his catheter popped out? ;-)
