Dr. Eugene Kwon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN is the type of oncologist-urologist you are looking for. He only treats metastatic and recurrent metastatic prostate cancer. Hello John - I think I would wait until after your call with Dr. Hirsch about your PSA history and also ask about best people to see about recurrence. I assume a high level scan would be the next step after maybe another PSA test to see where there is headed.

Be careful what you wish for, Dr. Eugene Kwon at Mayo - Rochester MN is very well regarded for advanced prostate cancer but he is with the Dept of Urology and Dept of Immunology at Mayo and not a MO per se.

It would be rare to find a MO that just does prostate cancer unless you want to go to an expensive boutique practice far away like:

Give it some more time then fire away. I feel the same way as you do about a recurrence and would seek out the best also.

Thanks Pax, yes I will be talking to her in about 10 min . I know University of Chicago offers the PSMA PET scan . But she is a very smart Dr. Scans first then see whats there . maybe salvage rad . Hope to stay off ADt , lupron , if possible . Thanks old friend .

Thanks JNF , my RO Dr. Hirsch just ordered me a PSMA-pet scan . Going to the University of Chicago for that pretty soon . Then we will know more .

Thanks Sr Sailor , my Uro said maybe an MRi then a scan of some sort . I believe the PSMA-pet scan will do a lot better tracing the mets if there. Go to the University of Chicago web site . Look it up . So we will see what happens .




















My RO is perplexed as why my psa is doing this and she asked me why did the Uro order the uPSA . I said from all the up and downs ( see signature ) thats what he decided . Could I have prostatitis with out knowing it ? Side affects I have none

I'm in Chicago, too. Had RP done June 2020 by Dr. Scott Eggener at University of Chicago. He was recommended by a friend in San Francisco who researches cancer (not prostate, however).

I've been very pleased with Dr. Eggener's approach and would highly recommend him. He's actively conducting research, teaching, and practicing; he does international volunteer work in urology as well. He is, I believe, accepting new patients. He's a good listener and genuinely cares about his patients' well being. After starting Trimix, I suffered a priapism and needed to visit the ER. UC Urology has residents on call 24/7. I called them first and they provided good instruction. Next day, resident followed up with me and she also passed along the information that I ended up in the ER to Dr. Eggener. He called me that same evening from his home to see how I was doing.

My colleague worked with Ed Schaefer at Northwestern. He's well known and used to be at Johns Hopkins, I believe. He's also famous for doing Ben Stiller's surgery. So you have some excellent choices right here in Chicago.

Mayo and Cleveland Clinic are wonderful, I've heard. But if you're going to be undergoing tests and possible treatment, it's not very convenient to be commuting back and forth.

Since my father had prostate cancer, I started PSA testing in 2010. First biopsy in 2011. Small amount of Gleason 3+3. Did watchful waiting, then active surveillance with Dr. Eggener starting in 2016. 2019 MRI (Tesla 3) and biopsy came back with a couple PIRADS 5 areas and 19 mm of Gleason 3+4. Looked into HIFU and other treatments. But decided that surgery was the best option. location of tumor was close to nerve bundles. So my surgery was "partial nerve" sparing. Nothing worked until I tried Tri-mix recently. Unfortunately, even though I used a lower dose than what was injected in the doctor's office, I still suffered a priapism. ER visit was no fun. Will be inquiring about pills and Tri-mix in another post.
