As a kid growing up in the 1950s, I can confirm that universal tobacco smoking was not only entirely acceptable back then, but even encouraged in subtle ways.
For example, if doctors smoked, it must not be all that harmful to your health, right?
Below is a string of TV commercials from that era (stop them when you've seen enough), showing doctors puffing away, and presumably happily doing so.
But any hook would do. As in commercial 2, with the pretty blond blowing cigarette smoke right at the camera.
Ridiculous now, but quite the norm back then.
