Would be nice to know what surgeon he used. Surgery was in 1993. I would call that a one and done.

1993, so it must have come back if pc is listed as a cause. It’s all academic now. He lived 94 years regardless of what he had.

A better title to this thread might have been
Sidney Poitier beat prostate cancer for a significant number of years...
However, the details of his cancer 'journey' are not publicly known.

Also interesting, to me at least, is that 1993 was fairly early in the "PSA" era, after PSA appeared as a diagnostic tool but before the issues with overtreatment were clearly understood. At that time it was not uncommon to go from a high PSA to a digital exam to surgery in a few weeks, and biopsies were not nearly as common as they are now. Never mind that it was guaranteed to be open surgery, most likely trans-perineal incision open surgery--an absolutely brutal surgery compared to today. That he lived through the surgery, and then another almost 30 years is amazing in itself.

On April 26, 1982 Dr. Patrick Walsh performed the first intentional nerve sparing prostatectomy on a 52 year old professor of management. It took several months for the patient to fully recover, but remained fully functional and cancer free.

So Sidney had more than a decade of surgical progress before his surgery. I’m sure the scalpels were very sharp and the surgeon’s nerves calm. After all he thrived for some 30 years following the surgery.

JNF: that's about the time my dad was diagnosed. He would have been 95 last year, and he's been gone for 17 years now. So, Mr. Poitier had a darned good run, and I agree with the assessment that he died of old age, with a number of things going on.

At 94 he died of old age plain and simple. Hope I can reach that point and be reasonably functional. Regarding pca we don't really know if he had something that really required treatment. Nonetheless less he had a great surgeon. We don't really know what he had to go thru. He was a private person with strength of character. He moved on with his life in spite of his ordeals. A great inspiration. Loved the movie to sir with love an he also was in blackboard jungle a movie with a similar theme
