Hi there .
I had a prostrate Biopsy 3 weeks ago and got bad after effects worst of all was I couldn't pee so they gave me a catheter for 2 weeks .Please advise will I be able to pee on my own when they remove it

Sorry to hear that news, Paul. I can confirm that not being able to urinate really hurts. I ended up in the ER twice last year, after two procedures left me unable to urinate. While I don't know all the details of your case, I was able to pee again. And so should you.

Hello Paul and welcome. So sorry about the side effects from your biopsy. I'm sure it's not a consolation to you but your situation is quite unusual. However, the chances are that the inflammation cause by your prostate biopsy is now gone so your normal urinary functions are likely to return.

Of importance are the results of the biopsy. Hopefully it was negative. If not, can we help you with thought thoughts about your situation?

So I assume you enjoyed urinary retention starting 1 week after the biopsy? If so, I had the same thing. Catheter in for one week, was fine when the catheter was removed, with 'fine' meaning back to my BPH symptoms.

If you were OK before the biopsy, you should be OK after. In fact, I'd say a week is plenty. Two weeks is just punishment. smile

I have to tAKE Tamsulosin to help me urinate.
Several days after my last biopsy I went to urinate, and the pee didn't come out right away and the end of my penis hurt.
When the pee came out, a slug of blood came out then all was good again.

I've had several bouts with urine retention and it's horrible. Mine was the result of prostate surgery, not a biopsy. Presumably the biopsy irritated something in your urinary tract and it swelled shut. When the swelling goes down you'll be back to normal peeing. At least that's what I think. I'm a doctor, but a doctor of philosophy, not of medicine, so don't take anything I say too seriously.
