This song was written and performed by Dan Fogelberg for his wife Jean.

After his death Jean said all proceeds from it's sales on the internet would go to The Prostate cancer Foundation.

I wish Dan's cancer could have waited 15-20 years to appear. He'd likely still be with us. From wikipedia:

"In May 2004, Fogelberg was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. After undergoing therapy, his cancer went into partial remission. In August 2005, Fogelberg announced the success of his cancer treatments. However, his cancer returned, and on December 16, 2007, Fogelberg died at home in Deer Isle, Maine, at the age of 56."

With all the ADT treatments, surgeries, radiation advancements, and now with the promise of LU-177, the fight has come a long way for the brothers with advanced PCa. Even in the wake of dealing with this horrible.disease, we are blessed to be living with it now, rather than 15-20 years ago.

he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. if DF had been diagnosed earlier he might still be with us. btw, lovely song

Dan was a wonderful man and a great songwriter. He took his chances, with the best information he could get, two decades ago. Most of us to the same today.

He loved horses, and wrote this song to honor the Derby, that was run today, back in 1982.

But that horse, which had only been added to the field two days earlier, by total happenstance, went on to beat the worst odds in Derby history and win the race, in one of the greatest stories ever.

This thread is causing me to reflect as well. My father died of advanced PC in 2004 as well. And, yes, one of DF's songs gets me choked up--The Leader of the Band.

I saw him at chastain park in Atlanta when it was just him and a grand piano and guitars. 1994 or 5. Run for the roses was played on piano with a bowl of red roses on top. He was a special guy. Left us WAY too young.

When I was diagnosed in 2013, I remember reading an article that heralded the new roll-out of newly approved prostate cancer medications such as XTANDI and ZYTIGA.

Once my initial treatments started, my medical team called me to come in immediately with some news. Clinical trials had showed a survival benefit to moving TAXOTERE chemotherapy to the forefront of the treatment sequence, for cases like mine.

That same week, I was the first fellow to start the "early chemo plan" at my clinic.

All of these newer treatments, mentioned in the article, were heralded as "the golden age of prostate cancer research" --- in comparison to the previous decades, in which breakthroughs in prostate cancer treatment were few.

I'm thankful to hear that LU-177 treatments are already helping some of our readers here in recent months.

More precise radiation and specially-blended chemotherapy "cocktails" are helping others. ORGOVYX is another new option helping fellows here. Medications such as ZYTIGA and XTANDI are prescriptions one can take at HOME.

New clinical trials are in progress, and new ones will be starting ... I can't wait to see the next BREAKTHROUGH!

Dan Fogelberg left us a rich legacy of music.

It's meaningful to see there's a song that is generating funds for continued research and prostate cancer awareness.

I loved Dan Fogelberg in his day, especially The Leader of the Band. This thread has brought back some great memories.

BTW, not to beat a dead horse, but thanks Cyclone for not using the bold italics. It makes your posts much easier to read.

Yes, his songs about his father, his wife, his love of animals, and his appreciation of life....still resonate.

Also agree with the ease of reading the valuable posts from Cyclone, without any need to boldly stand out ;-)
