How a visit to a Surgical Oncologist went so wrong.

Had a appt with a Surgical Oncologist last week and it went really bad. First the appt started an hour late and was told I will be seeing a resident dr. instead of the dr I suppose to see. The resident dr was useless, I seem to know more than he did. At the end he ask me if I had any questions for the Surgeon. Of course I did. He said he will get him. Over an hour later he shows up in surgical scrubs. Did not really want to talk with me, seem to be in a fog. Rushed me to make a decision. This morning I went back to look at their notes of our appt. It was all totally canned description. First thing was mention that it stated we reviewed the Partin tables with my stage value. Right off the bat, he wrote that I was at T2b/c stage. That was not right at all. Previous drs put down as T1C. (Could not detect cancer via DRE, had to do mri/biopsy to find it). There is a big difference in projections between them. He did not talk to about Patin tables with me, (my wife was present as while). From there it was all canned statements. It looked liked he just cut and pasted from a textbook. This was at Duke Cancer Center. I thought they were one of the better cancer centers. No faith at all with them....

Has any one else have issues like this?

That was a terrible experience; I hope you can find another doc at Duke who is more patient oriented.
Are you sure you want to go the surgery route or are you still exploring options?
If the latter is the case, I would take your experience as a sign that surgery is not the way to go.
I know this is not rational on my part!

I have also seen some canned and/or wrong notes on medical office portals. I would give him another chance before dumping him.

Three years ago, after first being diagnosed, I chose to get a second opinion at Duke. Their cancer center has a program whereby a board of physicians (surgeon, radiation oncologist, and medical oncologist) interviewed/examined you separately and later, after consulting each other, gave you their recommendation. Your experience with the surgeon sounds very similar to mine. Duke did review my biopsy slides prior to my visit and actually downgraded the percentage of my pattern four disease slightly. The surgeon spoke often of the Partin tables, told me their lab was better than my local lab, told me my disease had likely already spread beyond the prostate, and recommended immediate surgery without sparing the nerves. My time with this surgeon was starkly different from the visits with the other two physicians and somewhat unsettling. I never did receive a consensus recommendation from the board, but the radiation oncologist followed up with me via email and phone. That physician also sent a report and recommendation to my local RO.
After returning home I did some research on the surgeon and radiation oncologist which helped me confirm my decision to go with radiation as my primary treatment.
