Of course we have used matter to radiate cancer for a very long time in the form of brachytherapy, both low dose rate seeds and high dose rate. Each uses matter to radiate as opposed to light (photon).
Interesting factoid...the isotopes used in brachytherapy emit photons (x-rays) as their radiation, so in a sense they are photon therapy too, just maximized at the placement site. They emit relatively low energy photons, so they don't penetrate far.
The heavy ions and proton beams zap the cancer DNA via a different mechanism.
