2 years later

Good morning. Its 4:40am here. Sleep still eludes me. I was diagnosed in July 2020. PSA 35 Gleason score of 8. Second opinion by Epstein's team revised the Gleason to a 6. my urologist was still suspicious of the 35 PSA as well as my radio/oncologist. 5 1/2 weeks of hyperfractionated EBRT AND 2 years of LUPRON . My sugar level began to rise almost at the beginning of ADT and is now at 138. A1C 6.2. Diabetes is a real concern. I eat healthy (under the watchful eye of my wife of 43 years), walk, lift weights, 35 push ups every morning, golf,hunt ,fish. I am not a couch potato. Anyone else develop type 2 diabetes during ADT?

Thank you Coconut , you are right about ergo propter hoc. However in my case I'm fairly sure that 2 years of beating up my testosterone and other hormones (including insulin) that my sugar rise in due to Lupton.
I pray you will never need to go through that treatment. At any rate that you for the input. I hope your radiation treatment has rid you of this insidious cancer. Its always good to make new friends.

The most important thing is that you're cognizant of your sugar levels, A1C, and that diet and exercise are very important factors in maintaining acceptable glucose levels. Quite honestly, I wish I had an A1C of 6.2. Mine hovers around 7 or a little higher. I'm a heavy exerciser - but I enjoy my food too. Carbs are the killers. I like an occasional bowl of chips and salsa, but it shoots my sugars to the moon. Could stand to lose 5-10 pounds. My doc is happy if I can keep my A1C at 7. But I really should push to bring it lower. Not on ADT. I understand that complicates things even more, turning some Pca patients into diabetics or worsening the condition for those who already had it. I think you'll do just fine because you're concerned about it. Just use the glucose monitor, take the meds, minimize the bad carbs, exercise regularly, get your A1C taken a couple times a year and you'll be able to control it. Once your off ADT you may even be able to discontinue your T2D meds if you stick with the program. You're doing the right things. Good luck.

my weight seems to be extremely hard to lose while on lupron .
Yesterday I kayaked 5 miles while fishing with my son and gained 2 pounds. Only on ADT could that happen. I have my annual check up with my GP tomorrow so I will get her opinion.

I've been a Type 2 diabetic for over 10 years and have been treating it with insulin for about that same time as I did not like the SE of the oral meds. (Swan, Lucky you! Victoza didn't do a darn thing for my weight.) Recently I have had to "up" my dosage of daily Lantus. I was told there 5mg of prednisone that I'm taking along with Zytiga shouldn't really have much effect on my insulin requirements.

Actually, I've been attributing the need for higher insulin to be related to the Moderna Covid vax. It was after the 2nd vax that I needed to boost my Lantus dosage up 20%. All this before my PCa was dx. My son (38) who was long time "borderline" diabetic had to go on insulin after his Covid vax. While running on the high end of normal usually, he ended up in the hospital with BG of over 600. Severe pancreatitis. It's now over 6 months since that occurred and he no longer needs insulin but he went on an extreme carb-free diet and lost well over 50 lbs.

Anyway, I appreciate seeing that info. I'll have to be alert to any changes when I discontinue the meds.

Good to hear from you again.

Have been on continuous ADT since diagnosis in 2013.

I eat fairly healthy meals, over all.

With that being said, a huge paradigm shift for me was eliminating all the jugs of fruit juice I used to consume ~ Tropicana, Ocean Spray, Welch's ...

Nowadays, I drink water and brewed iced tea with no sugar ...

Sometimes overlooked, but I don't drink ANY calories ... except for an occasional soda or lemonade or malt at a diner or restaurant.

For me, at least, it was an easy way to eliminate calories!

Thank you again for all of your insights and sharing of experience. And hello Cyclone. I checked some old medical records going back 10 years and my weight has stayed with in 5 pounds 202lbs. So the Lupron has not really packed on a lot of weight on me. But I guess I need to be very careful about sugar intake. Anyway thanks all again. This forum is a God send in that there is a comfort in discussion of experiences regarding prostate cancer. In my working life I was an Architectural Hardware Consultant and worked on many commercial construction projects. One Project was the Allen B Pearson Cancer Center in my Home town. One day I was taking care of a door problem at the end of the project and started to feel a sadness for the cancer patients who would be visiting that beautiful facility as a cancer patient. Little did I know I would be one of those patients 8 years later. Thank you all for your comforting comments and wisdom.
