Drive home from surgery

Has anyone driven hime after surgery? Surgeon said I could drive home with catheter as long as I didnt take narcotics. Its about 2 hours.

With all respect, I think your surgeon's advice is sheer balderdash. A two-hour ride, no less?

UTSW @ Dallas will not allow anyone to leave after surgery unless they have a designated driver present......ditto Dallas VA care.

Could I have driven home after surgery? Yes. But would I want to drive home after surgery? Hell no!

My surgery was in the late afternoon and was released the next morning at 7 am. Luckily, my wife drove the 35 miles back home and I can tell you I felt every little bump and expansion joint in the road.

My surgery was the first one in the morning and I got out about 10 the next day. Doctor said not driving with the catheter. My wife drove the mile home.

I was released from the hospital the same day as my surgery. No way would I have driven the 20 minute drive to my home. Possibly a couple days later.

After my prostatectomy I spent two nights in the hospital. Then my wife hired a car to take us home, about an hour away. I was in bad shape and every bump in the road was painful. When I got to the house I staggered in and collapsed on a sofa. I was in no shape to drive at all, much less two hours.

I spent two nights in the hospital and I was in no shape to drive home. Don't do it. It will not be the most pleasant drive you've had in your life, you'll be distracted by the catheter and not able to focus on driving.

Have someone drive you...

Maybe another option?

Googling

medical transport services

produces some hits for companies that specialize in moving recovering patients from city/state to another city/state.

Here's an example of one:

"Our expert interstate medical transport crew consists of a medical professional that has expertise in caring for patients with a wide variety of conditions, and professional drivers to get you and your loved ones to your destination safely."

You might inquire in the patient services office of the hospital where your surgery occurred to see if they can recommend any such company.

Maybe even your insurance would cover such a trip (worth asking).

Obviously a big plus with such an arrangement is that this kind of transport van would have, according to their description above for example, a "medical professional" on board who would be there if some kind of issue came up en route.

Maybe this wouldn't be an option for you, but perhaps at least worth looking into?

Really bad idea

For those of you near Philadelphia, if driving east bound out of the city over the Tacony Palmyra bridge, watch out for the hump as you start the climb up over the bridge.

I will never forget it! ;)

I stayed more than 24 hours in the ICU room after my surgery. It was because all the normal rooms were ocuppied but I guess spending a night there was mandatory. Whatever your protocol is, be sure that everything is more difficult with the catheter.
