Yes, it’s an outpatient procedure. I was home a couple hours after the procedure. I had a catheter which they let me take out myself at home the next day. There are 3 parts to the device. A balloon that is filled with saline that is placed in your abdomen, around the belt line for me. A “cuff” is placed around the urethra which they access by an incision in the perineum. A pump is placed in the scrotum using the same incision as the the cuff. All 3 are connected with tubing. The balloon keeps the system under pressure, inflating the cuff which compresses the urethra, stopping the flow of urine from the bladder. To open the cuff, you find the pump in the scrotum, squeeze then end of it a few times, and the urine will flow. The pump has a bypass orifice that lets the cuff inflate on its own in a minute or so. Within a day of using it, I was a pro. The pump is small, about the size of your little finger.

Life changing procedure if your incontinence is significant. It is outpatient surgery and is activated after about 6 week recovery.

so your saying you cannot use it for six weeks after the surgery? terry

2 weeks out of surgery. The surgery was more painful than I anticipated. No catheter, activation in 4 weeks.

Yes, my Medicare covered. Life changing for the better. Surgery was out patient. No catheter. Not a lot of pain. I would do again.

I had the AUS installed about 4 years ago and the surgery was not that bad. Tylenol was all that was needed. I did keep a near daily journal during the recovery. You can read it here:
