I was having fun the other night watching and listening to Youtube videos of some of the great 1960s songs, when I came across and played "It's My Life " (The Animals, 1965).
What I watched was obviously recorded around the time of that first release, and then later put into modern video format and added to Youtube. So it's probably video of the original band singing the original song. It's linked below.
But as I watched it, there was something that immediately struck me about
it, something that apparently passed as entirely socially acceptable entertainment, even amusing humor, back in 1965, but which would be deemed totally outrageous by today's standards of sexism.
Namely, that while the video is the enjoyable musical presentation of a great Classic Rock song, it's also as sexist as it can possibly be.
Watch it and you'll see just how much it degrades women (although the young lady in the background in one scene, bobbing her head back and forth to the music, certainly seems to be having a good time).
Still, if this video had come out in modern days, it would have been immediately and roundly savaged by most for its sheer sexism and misogyny.
OTOH, some might simply say, "hey, lighten up, it's just a music video, maybe a little tasteless, but harmless enough."
Well, you watch and decide for yourself.
Anyway, it's interesting to see just how much in general society's notion of what constitutes sexism has changed over the past fifty plus years, as the video of this band's performance from 58 years ago demonstrates.
