I submitted a saliva sample to get some genetics info
I think I get results in about a month.
OK, I know very little about this.
I keep seeing mention of BRCA1 and 2.
Suppose a defect or issue is found.
Is that good news or bad news. I GUESS it might suggest txs to try or avoid.
That's at least more information, but...good? Bad?

From my previous post:
FYI - The company that actually did my genetic testing in 2019 was INVITAE. The information on the test results said:
"The following genes were evaluated for sequence changes and exonic deletions/duplications:
ATM, BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, BRIP1, CDH1, CHEK2, EPCAM*, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, NBN, NF1, PALB2, PMS2, PTEN, RAD51C, RAD51D, STK1, TP53
The following genes were evaluated for sequence changes only: HOXB13*"

I am not sure that the information helps a lot although it might point to some treatments that work better than others if positive for anything. Helps any male children so they have something to check for.

Several years ago I had a complete whole genome sequence done (WGS). I had one single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for prostate cancer in BRCA1 which was insignificant. I also had an SNP for malignant melanoma and about half a dozen SNPs for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

Mel, certain mutuations will predispose you to certain diseases, such as breast cancer, prostate, cancer, etc. at this point, its important for your kids to know if you have any of those mutations. If you do, it just means that they should test. Should they test positive for example for the BRCA1 gene, they would be more predisposed to Breast and if a daughter, Ovarian Cancer. There are things they can do to manage that risk.

In addition to the valid points mentioned, there is good evidence that certain prostate cancer drugs will or won't work when a certain mutation is present. Therefore, in advanced prostate cancer cases, genetic tests are often done.
