OT: getting old sucks

oh man, sorry to hear that Hal. I have no helpful answers, just the hope that the liver lesion is nothing more than a benign something.
I have diverticulitis, which showed itself some years ago, on a colonoscopy. It never really bothered me. My understanding is that it is usually not a big problem, something that can easily be managed. DiverticuLOsis, is more of an issue.

Every time I turn around something different hurts/aches.

Found a PCP when I first moved to Florida 2.5 years ago... He was having me come in every 3 to 4 months... Couple of times I'd make it 6 months.... I kind of thought he was trying to get over on my Medicare. But it has dawned on me that Medicare is paying for these visits. So I make a point of bring up various issues....

The best comment I have ever read about enjoying old age comes from an essay by Cicero. He is asked by his imaginary interlocutor “Is it possible to enjoy life in old age.” Cicero replies by comparing our inevitable aging dilemma to attendance at the theatre. He offers that youth may be compared to enjoying prime seats in the first few rows, whereas old age is akin to sitting in the back. The action is further away and sound and sight are diminished, but it is still possible to enjoy the show. Remember too that in Cicero’s day the seats were concrete tiers and no electronic hearing devices existed. When I attend live theatre these days, regardless of where I sit, I always avail myself of an Electronic Audio Augmentation device provided by the theatre. I’m enrolled in the JH pancreatic cyst program. Every 2 years they make sure there’s no change. That’s the closest I’ve got to a spot on the liver.

Someone asked Dick Cavett how it feels to be old…

“I don’t feel old. I feel like a young man who has something wrong with him.”

Getting old does stink, but it beats the alternative!

Once they have you up on the lift they find stuff. In a scan recently to see how my lung mets were doing after 3 months on adt, they discovered something on my left kidney. A 3 cm lesion. Repeat scan confirms likely kidney cancer. Stage 1.

Working the details out on how to get that removed. 98% success rate. I dont lose my whole kidney but I do need surgery.

My wife has diverticulitis and it seems like the issues that arise from it come and go without much ability to predict. I can understand your reluctance to travel since it's caused us to think about it as well. We had a European trip earlier this year and we waited until the day before to decide if we would go or not. We went, but she was being a bit of a trooper. That said, she felt pretty normal about two days into the trip. Good luck to you!

No matter who you are, what you do for a living, how rich you are, where you live, what you drive or how great you look, sooner or later Father Time comes knocking at your door.

I've tried to adopt the philosophy of "The best age is the age you are", accept life on its own terms and make the very best of it.

Through whatever struggles I've encountered, it's worked for me.

I'm with you Fred. While getting old sure does suck, I'm still here and happy about it.
One week to the day, since my 95% blockage was cleared with a stent, in a main artery of my heart, I just walked 2.7 miles at a reasonably brisk pace and I feel like a million bucks.

So getting old sucks, but better than not getting old. Cheers to everyone here.

Yeah, diverticulitis is a real pain in the ass, and older isn’t always better.

Your post made me think about how fortunate I’ve been with my medical challenges over the years (77). Diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, polyps, PCa, skin cancer, three inguinal hernias, shoulder surgery, stroke, pulmonary embolism, etc. Currently dealing with proximal hamstring tendinopethy (talk about a pain in the ass). If it wasn’t for my doctors, I wouldn’t be here ….. they have become a part of my social life 😊.

At one time I thought eating well and being physically fit would shield me. Naaah, I’m 6’ tall and 155 pounds, walk 15,000 steps per day play pickleball 4 times a week, swim, golf , etc ……. and I still get a pain/illness de jour.

I’ve been lucky ….. and had good docs.

I guess you were offering it in jest, but after reading it a light went on. I’ve become an old coot (Halbert’s subject for this thread) …. maybe it’s time to cut back.

I knew there was a reason I dropped back into HW.

Ah, but it’s the good kind of pain.

It “was” the good kind of pain! Now it is a pain that continuously moves around the body as a result of the previous day’s activities. I have aches and pain in areas that I never knew could hurt.
