Sitting in the trailer on a foggy morning in St. Mary’s CG at Glacier NP Montana watching 4 older cycle touring guys packing up their wet tents. Fit looking bunch. They Were
on a bike tour of the area. Couple of days before, was on a shuttle up to Logan Pass on the Going to the sun road with 2 older fit guys on gravel bikes who were on their way back home to Whitefish Montana after a tour that took them up into Canada.
We have been here about
a week with 4 intermediate distant hikes averaging 4 to 6 hours traveling time
passing quite a few gray hairs.
All of these folks looked fairly lean and mean even though long on the tooth.
On our second hike, 12 miles, 3700’ climb, we ended up at a shuttle stop called the Jackson Glacier overlook.
As we waited for the bus, we observed many folks of various ages, most much younger than us, waddle the 50’ to 100’ depending on where their vehicle was to the overlook. Some struggled to walk that short distance. Not one was what would be called healthy in the BMI range.
As the topic is getting old sucks, for some, 40 is when the physical decline starts and for others who I have observed while being here who are considered old, can and do much more physically than most normal people in their mid years.
“As ye sew, so shall ye reap”
Today we rest before a 23 mile, just under 6000’ vertical hike West Gate Many Glaciers TH over Redgap Pass then over Ptarmigan Pass and back to the Ptarmigan TH day hike.
Glacier NP has something for everyone, even us oldies.
