In the past few months I have experienced a new phenomenon -- I suddenly have to have a bowel movement and I literally can't wait. I've had a couple of small accidents when I couldn't get to the toilet in time. Needless to say, this is distressing. I completed radiation therapy in September 2017, six years ago. I've heard that some of the side-effects of radiation can be delayed. Is this new urgency I'm experiencing likely to be a side effect of the radiation? Is this something that happens with age (I'm 68)?

that's a bummer. i am 68 and i had two forms of radiation 14 years ago and i have no bowel issues whatsoever. i did have bowel urgency issues for the first year after treatment that was unpleasant on two occasions that i remember but no accidents

imo, and i know it doesn't help you, you had radiation AFTER SURGERY which is great reason to avoid surgery as a primary treatment especially when adjuvant or salvage radiation is likely

i'm saying this for the guy who is seeking primary treatment, and i hope you get your issue sorted out

Sorry to hear that. I completed 39 fractions for a total of 72.0 grays and haven't had any GI issues. I can say this past year I have experienced slight bladder irritation which only occurs at night.

It's possibly a side effect of radiation.
I had the Spaceoar treatment before SBRT to help avoid excessive radiation to the bowel
I did develop urinary stricture and it happened over a year post treatment.
Had balloon dilation and thus far it's working.
Maybe a scope is in order. In the meantime diet and maybe some acidophilus may help.
I'm mostly constipated due to long term opioid medication use for.

Sorry to hear you're dealing with that. I've occasionally had alternating constipation and gotta go now!!! type diarrhea. I'm five years out from RALP and 4 1/2 years post radiation. No idea if it's a late showing side effect from radiation, or side effect of ADT (Eligard), or completely unrelated to any treatment. I've learned to get home quick if I feel it coming on. Other than that, I have no advice.

First, avoid Taco Bell.

Second, call your doctors. GP, radiation oncologist and GI doc. It could be from the radiation or something completely unrelated.

Like F8 I had two forms of radiation and am completely free of any adverse treatment side effects.
