I am extremely happy with my new knee. I am not sure I will be doing the other one anytime soon. I am a hunter. I know how to separate tendon from bone. It’s not an easy task. A sharp knife helps.
Now imagine removing all the tendons that wrap around your knee and sawing away enough bone to make room for the prosthetic, repositioning the tendons, and sewing you up.
Things will be a little stretched out. They have you do exercises primarily centered around range of motion, maintaining blood flow, and reducing scar tissue. It is true they will want you up and walking around within a few hours of surgery but again there is nothing about the first few weeks centered around maintaining muscle mass. There is reason for that. You are healing. They have their agenda and it is valid. Our doctors do a piss, poor job conveying any information outside the scope of their field. It’s not their fault. They don’t see it but it is an issue. That is why I will attempt to connect the dots.
Your leg muscles will atrophy. ADT will extend recovery time based on simple male genetics. Your bones, your muscles hell even the way you think is all built around testosterone. Without testosterone your thought process gets fuzzy. Without testosterone, you fail to maintain bone mass. Without testosterone it is very challenging to maintain muscle mass. If you are on ADT you have very little if any testosterone. I have been on ADT for 17 1/2 years. The last 10 years Zytiga has been added to the mix. My testosterone is undetectable I am 14 months post surgery today And I can honestly say I still have not been able to restore the muscle mass that I lost. I used to run 10k, half marathons and marathons. I was pretty good at it and I had extremely strong leg muscles. I had a lot of leg stamina. I live in the middle of nowhere. I don’t have access to the gym and although I still lift weights to maintain what little muscle mass I have left on my upper body I don’t have access to a leg workout. I have been using my bicycle and hills to strengthen my quads, it has been difficult strengthening my hamstrings.
Don’t get me wrong it can be done just be prepared as it will be a steeper uphill challenge for you then it will be for someone who has testosterone. My wife has more T than I do
