BPH?

Stumbled upon this forum after incessantly searching for information about prostate cancer. Hubby (61) had a 1.1 PSA December 2022; 3.4 PSA February 2024 and then 6.7 PSA six weeks later.
DRE showed enlarged prostate but no lumps (yay). MRI up next but not for another 3 weeks. Then biopsy. I’ve been googling PSA information for the past two months and dreaming about it. Doc said could be BPH but need to rule out cancer.
Anyone have similar story? Have to believe with a jump that quick it’s more than likely BPH. Thank you!

Sela, your are correct, a big jump like that in a short time is more likely to be BPH/Prostatitis. I hope thats the case for your husband. But yeah, you really need to "follow all leads" and eliminate the possibility of cancer before coming to that conclusion. The MRI will tell a lot, and then if it shows something it will need to be confirmed by biopsy. Good luck, hope you are just passing through here and do not become a permanent resdent.

yes thats a signifianct jump. but only a biospy can tell for certain if it's the big C. i had a combination of prostatitis and BPH...so anything is always possible. the waiting is the hard part. until then don't claim anything but the facts.

So you had cancer plus prostatitis and BPH all diagnosed at same time?

My PSA bounced from 4 to 116 back to 3.

And, it was caused by acute urinary retention and a UTI, both brought on by BPH. Nothing to do with prostate cancer. Aquablation fixed the blockages.

So, while you need to be checked out, never assume that PSA can determine if you have prostate cancer.

Thank you to everyone who’s responded. Appreciate your insight. We will wait the three weeks for MRI and take it from there. Urinalysis was clear so not sure if it’s infection. Hopefully just BPH and nothing riding shotgun with that.

Hi Sela, and Welcome to you! Don't be surprised or unduly concerned if the MRI is negative and his uro still wants a biopsy, given that it would be (I assume) his first. As has been mentioned, conditions that cause a rise in PSA can coexist, and MRIs and biopsies can each miss existing cancer. The combination is one way of reducing that chance, even if the risk doesn't go to zero.

The MRI will give the prostate size (look for it) which will be a good sign of BPH or not.

I would think his uro already knows the size (and shape) of his prostate and his PSAD (PSA density). My understanding is that TRUS equipment--also used for TRUS biopsies--automatically calculates prostate size. Simple division then gives the PSAD. The question may rather be whether his current PSA can be entirely attributable to BPH. This is an ongoing question for men who have a history of BPH with a rising PSA.
