One of my personal favorites who I saw live many times. One of the best shows was when he guested with the Long Beach (CA) City College jazz band in about 1980 and they, with him on lead sax, played his “Hideaway” album in full and I have a front row seat.

Not good news, David Sanborn could play, period. Fit nicely between jazz, big band, and rock and I was a fan.

Another noted victim of the “good cancer” who will get little press, thanks Vince.

My wife and I used to listen to David Sanborn albums all of the time. We just loved his smooth jazz sound. We're going to miss him and are really sorry that we never got to see him in person.

Always felt “smooth jazz” was a bit of a box that David Sanborn was put in like many musicians. He played to the level of people around him and seemed to be able to stretch out when needed.

he must have been diagnosed late for he was dead after just 6 years of it. i am still alive after 7 years but its no fun the meds i am on. stage 4

Several years ago I read a report from a medical oncologist summarizing the effect of untreated PCa. It said that other than a true G6, that left untreated once a tumor is present in the prostate the cancer will, on average, metastasize in five to seven years and then death will occur, on average, in three to five years. The major variable being the level of aggression of the specific cancer.

Thus, when we see a situation like Sanborn passing away so soon after the cancer was found, it should be presumed that it was already metastatic when it was diagnosed. This would infer that he was not in a regular screening routine from the age of 50 as is recommended. May he rest in peace and live on through his music.
