Oddly coincidental, his predecessor as center for UCLA Kareem has also been diagnosed with PC.

He and Karrem were two of the Big Men of my early life, and both made the cover of SI as high schoolers. And they both went to UCLA. He was a colorful character.

Who wouldn't love Bill Walton. The things I remember most were the 87 Championship when he was with the Celtics. He wasn't a starter but he came off the bench to play a huge role.

I saw John Wooden give an interview late in life and he spoke of a player who decided he had the right to wear a beard. Wooden told him that as coach he had the right to not allow beards or long hair. Wooden told him that the team would miss him. Next practice the player was clean shaven. Wooden didn't say Walton's name but it wasn't hard to figure out.

Walton reminds me of MLB pitcher Bill Spaceman Lee from the 70s. Especially during Walton's announcing career. It was a lot fun listening to Walton's off topic discussions during games.

A reminder that for too many men this cancer is deadly and should not be dismissed. He had the means, the intelligence and ability to have the very best treatment and he came up very short of an expected lifespan.

Please, never turn your back on this cancer. No one knows when and how it can return and do great harm. I am 14 years out from treatment and still test quarterly. I am not afraid, but I am diligent.

Haven't been here for a long while, but because a person I know was just diagnosed, I have resumed reading the blog.
Anyway, regarding Bill Walton, I read an obituary in the NY Times that stated the NBA said he died from colon cancer. For what its worth.

I tried to track down the Bill Walton's cause of death after first post and it is not totally clear. Larry Brown quotes the NBA and I could not find anything there confirming it.

No matter, he was a great basketball player, commentator, and a great person it appears. Way too many of these folks passing away now that were significant in my life's history.
