Hi Mumbo,
Thanks for replying. As I mentioned in my post, I have osteoporosis and a side effect of radiation and Lupron is osteoporosis. My back is pretty bad -3.1 T score (it was -4.2, but supplements and weight training have helped a lot. Not the toxic drugs. (I am a retired pharmacist). Have spoken with others about side effects with radiation - bloody diarrhea which comes and goes, cystitis. It most likely will cause a spread so my CRPS, as rads would hit the nerves in the perineal area. NO THANK YOU, no guarantee of cure, STiLL may need surgery later when I’m older. NO THANK YOU. I witnessed what radiation does to older people, like my FIL, it destroyed his back and hip. I have issues in both places. I trust my urologist he is no longer a surgeon as he is 76 and soon to retire. So he is not pushing it as a surgeon. The surgeon I saw didn’t really push surgery but did add, the cancer is growing albeit slowly. Both men said I will most likely need surgery sooner or later. Better at age 70 than 75 or 80. It’s not etched in stone yet, as I have one more consult with my own urologist. I’ll discuss radiation with him.
Understood, however, do not underestimate modern radiation treatments. I had surgery followed by radiation and do not have any of the issues you speak of. You might discuss with radiation oncologist and determine the hormone therapy is not necessary or of very limited duration given that you are considering AS for a possibly benign cancer condition. My wife is on Ibrance, HT, had a rib radiated, and gets Xgeva injections so I know what your worries are all about
but 6 mos of lupron or something easier is not much in comparison.
I am 72 and was having similar discussions with my late father 6 years ago who had brachytherapy because his fears of surgery were so great from men he knew who had bad results. You are talking the same way about
radiation and neither is really correct today. Keep your mind
open and talk to proper doctors to make a well informed decision. We all had to do that and any decision you make is fine.
