hi everyone

i just came back from the hospital with my dad . thanks to all of you i was able to ask some straight questions with a bit more understanding . my dad feels a lot clearer too wether it be good or bad he feels able to face whats coming . here is a run down of what the doctor said .i would be gratefull for your opinions .

psa 12.3  /    biopsy 7 out of 9 cores cancerous   /   gleason score 7   3 out of 4 cores with gleason score of 3+4     

4 out of 5 cores with gleason 3+4

the doctor said that most of the prostate is cancerous . he said that the chances are high of it spreading to the bones but we wont be sure untill he gets the bone scan next week . the results will take a week to come through . if it has spread to the bones he said the only sad treatment is hormone .

if it hasnt spread his options are radiation , surgery or hormone treatment . i have to start reading up on this treatment . one way or the other we will have to take whats coming and stay positive . i would be gratefull for your comments based on this information .

the doctor described the cancer as intermediate .

you and your dad already have what it takes to face this - a positive attitude. unfortunately, I don't have any words of wisdom regarding the actual facts. I know you'll be on pins and needles until the bone scan results come in. my father-in-law had prostate cancer, surgery to remove the prostate when he was in his late 60s. then it came back about 10 years later and he was castrated. his PSA count continued to be high and eventually the scans showed bone cancer. this was in his late 70s. he remained symptom and pain free until he passed away at 82. he was active up until that day and had a great life. so even though the facts may look grim, it doesn't necessarily mean an immediate death sentence. your dad is so lucky to have you by his side. take care and God bless, kat

With PSA's under 20, bone scans are usually clear.

As you might know, G 3+4 is better than 4 + 3.

Depending on local availability, there are often erMRI and other tests which can  help gauge extent of PC.

If there is high risk, hormones are often suggested in addition to surgery or radiation.

When you come to consider specific treatment options, the website www.yananow.net has stories from many men who have undertaken the various treatments for different periods of time up to 15 years. Look under mentor experiences.

Petal,
By the way my father has prostate cancer and has it for the last 10 years. He had radiation when it was first discovered and is now on the hormone therapy...every three months he gets a shot in the belly...no sympathy from me either when he complains about hot flashes!!!  tongue   He's doing fine!  He's been on these hormone shots for at least 5 years now.
