Your numbers are good and you are in good physical shape. You will be just fine. The anticipation and waiting are the hardest part. People kept saying it will be over before you know it and they were right. I will be thinking and praying for you. I had my surgery 10/12/06. I am almost back to normal four weeks later. Try to relax and chill out the best you can. You will get through this and you will be better.  My mother always said, "a coward dies a 1000 deaths". She was wrong it was only 986 deaths before my surgery. Again the thinking and waiting are the worst part. You really will do fine.

Hi Paul *Magaboo   We are right there with you my friend…         Paul   ~ we watched this surgery being done on a DVD…. No mutilation at all.   It is such a delicate operation…. A very gently prodding of tissues… away from the prostate so they can separate it and take it out.   You’ll have a 6” incision and 2 little incisions where the drains will be.   Remember ~ you need to take it extra easy when you bring Mr. Hang home…   let him be your friend!   If you have any questions or concerns…. Now’s the time to ask…   Being prepared and knowing ahead of time will make it much easier mentally.   There are a lot of us out here following beside you!   Following postings will have given you a wonderful head start so keep us close…. Okay      You make sure you tell your doctor to take out anything that looks suspicious…..   Having the open radical he can see and feel and this is GOOD!!!   We went with this surgery also and have had no regrets.   We made a very personal decision to take everything that might be hiding a few cells and again ~ no regrets.     Take care for now.   This week will fly!!!!!   I know it’s not turkey lurkey time in Canada… so we will send Happy Every-Days to you...   In Friendship ~ Lee & Buddy

Magaboo,  I understand your fears and concerns.  I too opted for the RRP.  There is only one DaVinci and two Dr's that currently perform the surgery here in Oklahoma City.  (Yes, we do have modern tehcnology, paved roads snd cars...hehehehe)  After meeting with my Dr. and finding out about the Dr. that assisted (spelling?) him I was really comfortable with my decision.  It was kind of nice knowing I actually had to highly skilled surgeons working on me at the same time.  Another fact im my case was that both surgons and myself are all in our early 40's.  I kind of thought they could see themselfs in my place. 

  You should not worry too much about the incision.  I really didn't have much pain or discomfort from it.  As for leakage and undergarments.  I had to keep my cathiter for three weeks due to a complication.  I have been using the belted (diaper like) ultra absorbant undergarments.  I used them from the day I got out of the Hospital.  I was having bladder spasams that would cause urine leakage around the cathiter.  I got pretty good at sealing things up with tape and womens hygine pads.  Actually cleand out the wife's supply of pad's she no longer uses.  After cathiter removal I gushed for almost a week with no control.  I was probably using 10 -15 a day (didn't really keep count).  I started counting on Sunday.  Used 7 on Sunday, 8 yesterday (Monday).  Control is starting to come back.  Not really gushing any more.  Just some mild leaking when standing from sitting and when walking.  I actually went to the golf course and putted for about an hour yesterday after my walk around the neighborhood.

Hi Paul  *Magaboo  ~   As you read postings ..... always remember that going in with a positive attitude will definitely be a plus.  Get through the surgery, get through the catheter, and then you can work on how your urinary status is once the catheter is removed.  No need to worry just yet...since it is a moot point at this time. I know you've read other postings and you can clearly see that everyone has a different story about the urinary incontinence.... so plan for some leakage and then you'll be happy if it's not as much as you thought it would be.  That's what happened to us.  Bought the big bag of undergarments and have 3/4 of a bag left.   Continue moving forward and stay positive.  We deal with each stepping-stone as it comes on the path of this journey.  Some folks have a few more stones than others.... and that's okay. We tackle them as they come at us. Know that we are there for you ~ okay.... and please make sure you make plans to keep in touch because this mama bluebird will be pulling her feathers out if we don't hear from you after surgery..... OKAY!!!!  Even if it's a one word posting......    Take care dear friend and we will be sending extra strength to you over the next several days to help you get to your surgery date. Hi Friends,
Sorry for not responding earlier, but I just came home from the hospital today. I'm doing ok thus far, I think. The only problem for me right now is that I have seral bladder spasms per day and these can be very uncomfortable. The rest of the pain is fairly mild and I'm sure, will improve with time. I have an appointment with my Urologist on the 12th of December to remove all remaining "hardware" and get the results from the Pathologist. The surgeon thinks that everything looked pretty good as far as containment is concerned, but I'll find out on the 12th for sure.
That's it for now, because sitting in front of my computer is still a bit uncomfortable.
I'll be back.

Paul,

I assume that they provided a prescription for the pills to handle the bladder spasms. I only had two while I was in the hospital and the pills knocked them out right away. They gave me some when I came home but I never had another one. The sitting at the computer right after surgery is painful and uncomfortable. In a few days you will be a lot better. Make sure that you drink plenty of liquids. You do not want an infection at this point and it promotes healing and may help with the bladder spasms. Look forward to hearing how you are doing. Welcome to the other side.

Magaboo (Paul) Like you Iam starting on my adventure too, Surgery sch. for 1-22-07 (open) so you will be able to give me advice too. These people are great and you know it is not just talk as they all have BEEN THERE. We all know what you are saying about being worried and scared, YES I am worried and scared too.

hi magoboo.... I'm pretty much in the same boat, will be having a biopsy done on the 18... I'm scared out of my wits, I can think of nothing else. I am alone also, and it petrifies me, there is lots of support here these people are wonderful... I suffer also with depression, I sometimes wish I could fall asleep and not wake up, I realize that is not a good way of thinking. And I pray God will give me a way to handle this physically and mentally if my results are positive, I wish you all the best.

Hi Rick.
You sound just like I felt when I was in your position last August to December 06. Totally shocked and scared of the unknown future and pain that lay ahead. It took me a while to get my head around the fact that I probably had (what is supposed to happen to other people, but not me): cancer. Being scared and depressed is probably a very common feeling for men in our position, but I'm sure you will in due time (as I and most of us here at this forum have) realize that this cancer is not the end of the world nor the end to a long healthy live afterwards. Being alone, without family or closed friends to talk about your condition makes it much harder to maintain a positive outlook ( I know because I was in the same position as you). The human mind always wants to visualize the worst possible scenario. Having someone to talk to about your condition will be a big help and that's what this forum is all about. I'm just glad that you have found this forum and I'm sure you will be able to draw from the members wisdom's and experiences. I know it will be a continuous source of encouragement, hope and friendship from those of us that have gone before you.
The biopsy is really nothing to be scared of physically, but waiting for the result can be very difficult. I know you will get thru it and deal with the result as we all have. In just a few short month you will be the one giving encouragement and advice to the next new member of this forum. Besides, you didn't tell us very much about the reason for the biopsy or what your PSA was. You may not even have cancer for all you know. Try and think as positive as you can.
I've had my open surgery on November 28, 06, and I'm going for my 2nd three monthly checkup next week. I have had very little pain and discomfort during the whole ordeal and have been totally continent since early January this year. I feel great except for ED problem which may carry on for several more month - a small price to pay for getting rid of the cancer.
Anyway, Rick, just remember that you're not alone. This forum is full of friends that will help and encourage you in any way they can and are only to happy to answer any questions you may have.

Magaboo - good to hear from you! It's been awhile but you've always been in our thoughts here in the forum. You have been a great support to all in sharing your own story.

You're right, I haven't participated in the forum as much as I should have, but I have been lurking here regularly. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. My healing to this point has been rather uneventful and I'm feeling great except for the ED, but even that seems to be slowly improving. I'll be going to 'vampire city' tomorrow to make my donation and will get the result from my Urologist on Friday, June the 15th. I hope it will be as good as my first test result. The time waiting for these test results is always quite stressful, but this too will pass. Hope you're keeping your fingers x'd for me.

Hi Paul,

Glad to hear you are doing okay. My surgery was about a week after yours and I'm due for my third PSA in July. You are right about the stress of waiting for it. I hope that as time passes we won't sweat it so much.

Hi Bluebird and all my other friends,

Sorry for not posting sooner, but been very busy with summer preparations and all that. Thanks for thinking about me, but I'm happy to report that the result of my PSA test on June 15 was as good as it gets: 0.

ED is still somewhat of a problem, but other than that I'm about as good as I've always been. No leaks, no pain or other discomforts.

I'm holding my fingers x'd again for biker90 on his 3rd test in July. It seemed to help last time :-). If you're reading this biker, hope you'll do the same for me.

Thanks for your message. Sorry for not being more active on this wonderful, God send forum, but I'm reading most of the new comments here several times during the week. All the people here, but especially you, are just so wonderful. I really  don't know where I would be at this moment if I had not had your support, your compassion and your amazingly calming words of help and reassurance. As it is, I'm feeling just great and my ED is slowly improving. On the 12th of September I'm going for my 3rd PSA check and I'm hoping for the same result as the previous two times.
