I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Stage T2a, Gleason 6, PSA 1.3.  I am interested in robotic surgery.  Has anyone had any favorable experiences using any urologist in Florida?  I am uncomfortable with the limited surgical (robotic) experience of my current urologist.

Ehud, sorry to welcome you here, but you found the right place. We also wanted the robotic, but found very limited experience here in OK. We went to Austin Texas to Dr. ***in. In our part of the country, he was the best and we loved him. Good luck to you. Others here will know of docs closer to you. I will say that traveling for the surgery was not as bad as we expected. Welcome Ehud - My husband had surgery (laproscopic radical prostectomy) at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa FL - Dr. Julio Pow-Sang was his surgeon. Don did have a good recovery with no problems directly related to surgery. His cancer had escaped so he was restaged. Even so, he believes surgery was right for him.

I live in S.E. Fla. and was pretty clueless 4 years ago when I was diognosed. I knew I didn't want the Doc that gave me the biopsy (long story) so I started looking around and doing some research. After talking to several doctors in my area I found a Uroligist I liked but he was inexperianced as far as surgury goes (under 100 RP's) so I descided to go up to Johns Hopkins after reading Dr. Walsh's book. Since then I have learned so much more about about PC and treatment options. Several guys here had their surgeries done at Jackson Memorial in Miami and speak very highly about them. I have also heard that it ranks very high as an overal hosptal. There is also the Clevland Clinic in Davie and the Mayo in Jacsonville so there are plenty of excellent choices here in the Sunshine state. Just as everyone here will tell you, get the best doc w/ the most experiance with whatever option you choose and be sure you are comfortable with him / her before you descide. Good luck.

This is Ehud's wife.  Thanks for all the help on this site.  We have been doing lots of research and reading numerous books as well as talking with people that have had surgery or seeds/radiation.  We also met with radiology oncologist. 

After talking with local urologist this week, robotic surgery is scheduled for July 9.  After learning he has done well over 200 robotic surgeries, we feel much better.  We asked numerous questions.   

We are ready to get this over and move on with life.

Age 57

Gleason 3+3 , 2 of 12 biopsy cores positive (40% and 5%) and 2 cores with HGPIN

PSA 1.3

Robotic surgery scheduled for July 9

Arron Krongrad has probably done more laproscopic surgeries than any surgeon in the country. Laproscopic is as easy on the body as the robitic...just no robot.

Winter Park Urology in Winter Park Florida is who I used. Dr. Patel.....he ROCKS!! His bedside manner is professional and caring. He took the time to meet with us as much as we needed before the operation. He helped put me at ease. He works out of Florida Hospital and has over 250+ Davinci's under his belt in the past 3 years! Operations are done every Monday (3 of them) and there is always another doctor present.

I'd recommend him to anyone!

I am 55 yrs. old and was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last week. I also heard from my urologist here in N. Fla. that Dr. Krongrad was probably the best there is. Dr. Krongrad called me today and answered many of my questions. He seems genuinely concerned and assured me I had nothing to worry about. I'm scheduled for surgery by him on Aug. 14th, and I can't wait to get this "demon" out of my body!

I had my LRP (Laproscopic Radical Prostatectomy) performed by Dr. Arnon Krongrad on Aug. 14th. I'm here to tell you, Dr. Krongrad is THE MAN! I researched before choosing Dr. Krongrad and found he's rated #1 in the U.S. for using the DeVinci robot for prostate surgery. He pioneered it's use in the U.S. and at the time of my surgery, there were two patients (one from France and the other from Japan) who were flying in to have Dr. Krongrad perform their surgery. I didn't even need so much as a Tylenol for pain afterwards. Yes, there was "some" discomfort but, it wasn't bad at all. I made a big mistake though, by smoking a cigarette a few hours after my surgery. I went unconscious, my face turned grey, my eyes were wide open but rolled back, I had a weak corotid pulse and I was starting to convulse. SO, my suggested is this: Do what Dr. Krongrad says and you'll be just fine!
He is truly blessed by God!

Dr. Krongrad, if you read these messages, I want to thank you again for ultimately "saving my life"! If I can EVER do anything for you, please let me know. By the way, I've stopped smoking after 40 yrs. of the nasty things!

I'm glad that you all have had a positive experience with Krongrad. I live on the west coast of Florida and in May of 2003 I called Dr. Krongrad's office for a consult and was told by his receptionist that I would have to have $10,000 up front before he would do the surgery. At the time I had Anthem's Blue Cross/Blue Shield and was told by Anthem that he did except there insurance. I told them I didn't have that much money and instead traveled to Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis and had the LRP done there. Maybe he has changed his policy but he lost credibility with me.

I'll be having mine at Baptist in Pensacola.  Have any of you been there?  By the by, why is it Davinci?  Did he invent this too?
