Okay, the needle going in was estremely painful, we got about a 1/4 - 1/3 semi-erection, and my poor husband is playing video games to get his mind off of the pain - as bad as the muse.

So I went back to some of your postings to see if we did something wrong. One thing is I saw many said to insert at a 90 degree angle, which wasn't in the dr. or caverject instructions. Because the dr. didn't demo the shot, when Jeff tried to puch the plunger it didn't feel like it was moving. He pulled it out and I pushed it and a little medicine came out. So he reinserted and a little more came out. If the dr. had administered it the first time we'd have seen how hard you have to push and realise it doesn't move very far.

When we were in the dr.s I mentioned that some men had problems with caverject and asked about bimix, that some had an easier time with that. He actually said, "well they're not telling the truth, because it's the same medicine in it". ( I guess we should have walked out then.)

So I told my husband we're not trying this again until the dr. does it for you, so we have the placement right. I figured I'd print some of your postings so I'd be armed with the right info. Then I decided to look up bimix myself. On the Phoenix5 website, (another prostate cancer website) they have a section on injections. The first one listed is caverject. It states that the needle that it comes with is very large - not the diabetic needle, and that when using it you should change it out. I felt so bad for Jeff. Here I'd been telling him that everyone said the needle itself wasn't so bad, and I couldn't figure out how so many of you didn't have that much pain with it. Now I know why.

Soooo - it's back to the doctor but I'm tired of being passive. To be honest, I just started crying out of frustration. We went through so much with my dad and his doctors making such horrible mistakes, I believe leading to his passing away from his cancer much sooner than he or we expected, and I'm just tired of them treating one part of an illness, and not being concerned with the "whole" patient. Why in the world would our dr. not have known it would be more comfortable using a smaller needle? It's not like Jeff's the first guy he's ever treated.

Any way, please keep us in your thughts and prayers. I know we have it a lot easier than most. It's just been a rough year and it would be nice to have somewhat normal sex with my husband.

I'm very sorry to hear about your difficulties.  You are right in going back to the doctor (maybe a different one) and get the guidance that you need.  We are a few months behind you and not getting good ED results.  Injections will be our next step.

I found several articles on- line that helped me make a decision.  Maybe you can check this one out and show it to your urologist. Whoops...I can't seem to attach the article to this message.

You can find it by searching on Medscape or in the original magazine article.(Urologic Nursing Magazine).  The title is 'Intercavernosol Injection Algorithm'.  If you do a search of intercavernosol you will find lots of other information that will help with 'how to inject' and the various bimix and trimix ratios.  Hope this helps.

I actually came across that site tonight - I wish I'd looked it up before our appt. I just assumed since so many people on this site have dr.s working with them through their ED that the whole bimix/trimix PGE1 was pretty standard with most dr.s. I really didn't know what to say when the dr. discounted it, but now I'm just mad - at myself for not being prepared, and at the dr. for not doing his best for us as a patient. As I read that article that you're referring to, I was amazed at how proactive they were in helping their patients really know what they're doing, and being prepared. That's the kind of doctor I want for Jeff. I'm thinking of going to the local pharmacy that actually makes up these mixes of trimix and bimic and asking them for the names of urologists that use their services - at least it would be someone who does more than hand you a box with some samples and send you on your way.

thanks for the encouragement - by the way, it does get better. We definitely see improvement in Jeff's function. We'd just like to speed it up if we can! The sooner you get on top of it, the better'

Thanks Kat - I think I'm going to do that today. I had a melt down last night - the more frustrated I got, the more powerless I felt - and I started feeling like I did when dealing with my dad's doctors. Then I just felt such guilt about what I could have/should have done for my dad, and I felt like I was letting Jeff down the same way, by not getting enough info. My dad was like Jeff - just kind of going along with whatever the doc says. I remember him sitting on his couch when he was so frail telling me he had done what he thought was right, trusting the dr., and the hurt and regret on his face knowing he should have questioned more. I don't know, it all just kind of overwhelmed me last night and I don't know if I was more mad at the dr.s or myself.

But today's a new day and I always feel better after a good cry. Now I'm on a mission, so I don't feel so helpless, I guess. Thanks for the encouragement, and the hug!

bec & Jeff,

I apologize for not recognizing that you had a Caverjet sample which does have the larger needle. The firm that makes Caverjet will not supply the 30 gauge needle because of concerns that it may break off in the penis and they do not want to be sued. Again, why did your urologist not tell you about it. If Jeff had penile aching from Muse then it is most likely that he would have it with Caverjet. I can testify that the aching that Caverjet causes does make you to not want to inject yourself again. It took me a month to get over it before I tried the Bimix. When I had no pain or aching at all with the Bimix I was extremely relieved. Again, Bimix does not have the same medication as Caverjet.

It is worth what you are going through to get the near normal erection that comes with the injection. Hang in there Jeff and do not give up. I know what you are going through.

Thanks Tamu. I do remember you mentioning to make sure we had the right sized needle - I just assumed that since that seemed to be what everyone was using, caverject would have it too. I've never seen a diabetic needle, so I thought we had the right thing. Our dr. took a sample syringe and needle out to show us how to use the syringe, so he saw the needle. We had also told him about Jeff's negative experience with Muse, so it seems logical he'd have a similar response to Caverject. I think sometimes they just don't care to listen.

I found a compound pharmacy near our house and I'm hoping they will give me reference for a dr. who uses them. If not, I may contact a suport group in our area and see if I can get some names from them. We really appreciate all the info and encouragement - I've learned more on this site than from any dr.

Sorry you guys are having difficulties. Yes the needle with Caverject is way too big. I also use Caverject but after I mix the solution I draw the amount needed in a small we syringe .

I'm surprised that the Dr did not do a trial injection.

Don't give up as others have said there are more options. BiMix and TriMix.

Is there something we can help you with? You seem to know a lot about the various mixes (bi-, tri-, quad-, etc.). From time to time we do get new questions and would appreciate your expertise but this thread is almost eight years old and some of us might be wondering why you are here...
