Does PC make a person have a higher risk of getting other cancers?

Hi Everyone,

 

Does having prostate cancer make someone more susceptible of developing other cancers in the future?  Are there any precautions that could be taken?  Should my husband see an oncologist at this point? 

 

Does anyone here share this concern?

Hi AEG,

I asked my uro the opposite, does having prostate cancer exempt me fro having other cancer. He said no such luck. They are unrelated. I would imagine the usual precautions still are in effect as far as getting some other kind. Diet, exercise etc. I have some suspicious spots in my colon so asked for another colonoscopy but my doc said to stay with the current 5 year schedule. Seems like every test I get runs something up my rear end.

Treatment, depending on type (photon radiation or brachytherapy) MAY increase incidence of certain types of cancer in the years following treatment but understand that having PCa does not mean you will be any more susceptable to other kinds. As with any cancer there are too many variables to state categorically that you will develop any other cancer.  So, no I do not share that concern.

As jayadub mentioned, I think the treatment would be more an influence than the fact that you had PC. This was a question that I had for my Hematologist as the rare form of PC that I had (Removed last week by surgery) was found in a post chemo CT scan. I have CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia), which is currently in remission and my Hematologist said that about 5% of people with this type of Leukemia develop a second cancer. What I would really like to know is if the chemo was the culprit or if they are completely unrelated.  

Stick with the regular check-ups. I never would have known that I had PC had it not been for the post chemo scan as my PSA was normal because I did not have adenocarcinoma but a rare pure neuroendocrine carcinoid on the prostrate.

I asked my urologist exactly that question after being diagnosed. He answered that studies have been done and have found no statistical relationship between having prostate cancer and eventually having other types of cancer.

I was thinking the opposite also after my dermatologist found a deadly melanoma on my arm...2. stitches turned out to be 22 a week later.... nasty scar on my arm and as I wait for my results from the prostate biopsy ...my mind goes round and round. Did that melanoma find its way to my prostate..... so I could understand you thinking that way.
