Good Friends,
Watch for those amateurs out drinking tonight.....
Enjoy the fireworks!
about 38 years ago, another good friend came by in his new Plymouth Valiant with a large paper bag full of $60 worth (1970 prices!) of fire works and picked up almost a dozen kids from our household and neighborhood (no seatbelt laws then....).
He drove us out into the country to the river below the dam to celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another.
As we jumped out of the car for a brief meeting - to set the ground rules before we started the "show" -, my 10-year-old sister surreptitiously grabbed one bottle rocket, ran over to a picnic table, set it on its side, and lit it. This being Texas, the windows to the car were open. This being my sister, the rocket flew into the car, into the large grocery bag of fire works - and chain-reaction ignited the entire bag.
As we all watched in awe, the kids thought,
"Now we will never get to fire off any fire works!"
The Good Samaritan friend thought only two words,
"My car......"
No serious harm. A little singed fabric and a perpetual odor of gun powder.
I pray that in 2008 that very soon we find
A cheap-and-easy-no-side-effect cure for all cancers - NOW!
Have a meaningful holiday. Be safe.
Your Friend,
