Proton Beam facilities??

Hello All,

I have pretty much made up my mind to pursue the Proton Beam treatments. My question is: does anyone have experience with the MPRI in Bloomington, Indiana, or the University of Florida's Proton Beam facility in Jacksonville. Anyone know of a reason to choose one over the other?

I would apply to both and see who gets you in first.  I think both have coordinators who work with patients to find housing.  There are 2 military RV parks here and some stay at Flagmingo RV Park north of town.  Those staying there like it.  I pay approximately $100 week here at NAS JAX and I believe Flamingo is $600 month.  I have heard housing is 1000 month and up but most seem to find places. 

For Florida call (904)588-1800, or toll free (877)686-6009 that will be the switch board.  Ask to speak to Katie Mahoney. She has housing information.  No information on Bloomington but look them up  on the net and call.

Florida is coming up over MPRI, for a number of reasons. My treatment period may extend over turkey day and I could go see my son in WPB. My neuropathy acts up in cold weather. And Florida must have real state of the art equipment, as new as it is.

I was thinking it could run a couple of thousand for housing. I may try a small mobile home, like the old Spartan trailer I lived in once in Lake Worth. I'll call the Flamingo.

I did my air force time at Orlando AFB, Pinecastle (McCoy then I think) and a three month vacation down at Homestead AFB. I originally was working with the TM 61 Matador guided missile in 1956, but there wasn't enough equipment to keep us all busy. So they sent me to Homestead to learn the B-47 and spend my afternoons on the beach. What a life it was. We would get a gang of fellows together and drive all the way up to Ohio and back on the long weekends. Those were the days, before florida got crowded. And I remember watching some hot shot full colonel who was a real B-47 jockey. On take-off at Pinecastle with that amazing aircraft he would have the wheels up before he was three-quarters of the way down the runway, and not more that 50 feet off the ground. What a character.

A new Proton Beam facility will be built in Michigan.
