Thank you all for you comments regarding Dr. Patel in Orlando Fl.  I know he was in Ohio prior to be appointed Medical Director in Orlando.  I also was very impressed with Dr. Patel and felt better after my visit.  I am scheduled to be operated on in October and would like to hear from anyone who has used Dr. Patel.  He also accepts Medicare which a lot of these surgeons do not and is one of the most experience in his field.  As you all know the unknown is very stressful and waiting for the operation seems endless but I know I need to wait 8 weeks after my biopsy.  Any advice is appreciated.  My wife MJ joined HW two years ago when she was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatis and found everyone very supportive.

I came here almost two years ago also, and found the same thing MJ did. Caring compassionate support. And I know you will feel the same way as you travel along. I used be the moderator of this forum and I am biased is saying this is the best prostate cancer forum for anyone starting out on their journey. I didn't used Patel, I am out west and live in Vegas. I went to the City of Hope for my robotic surgery, and this procedure is very routine. It is a big time surgery, but it is routine and there are so many wonderful doctors doing it. Patel's reputation is very good, so rest assured you are in good hands. I guess my point is that you can gather information about this from anyone who had the robotic surgery. Certainly getting prepared for after the surgery is prudent. What we went through and how we dealt with things is useful information for all who are heading to the O.R.

I had my robotic sugery on July 1st and I remember being VERY APRREHENSIVE before hand. I can only say that ALL of my fears were unfounded! It really was not as bad as I imagined at all! The key I discovered was walking as often and as soon as possible. I sincerely believe that helps kick start the healing process. Here is it 90 something days later and I have very little incontinence (only when I sneeze or belly laugh!) and I am well on my way to full erections! I understand your trepidation. Wow do I! Dr Patel was an excellent choice for me and I am sure you will discover the same! I wish you all the best!

It is good to hear that you are doing so well and were happy with Dr. Patel.  How long before they removed the catheter?  Dr. Patel told me that if I have my surgery on Thursday the catheter will be removed on Monday or Tuesday.  We plan on staying in a hotel in Orlando until the catheter is removed so I am really interested in how long it took.  Some of the other guys on this forum seemed to have the catheter in much longer then 5 days.  Thanks for any information about the operation the waiting is very hard I wish I could go today and get this over with.

I had surgery with Dr. Patel almost a year ago now, while he was still at OSUMC. I did not interview any other surgeons although I did travel all the way from California for the surgery. It worked out well for me that I have relatives in Ohio who were able to help out. I am very happy with my choice in Dr. Patel and was impressed with his statistics when I first met him. My catheter was in only five days. A cystogram (x-ray of the bladder?) is used to verify that the catheter may be removed. I had an extremely good recovery that I attribute to luck, being relatively young and having a good surgeon. As part of the post-surgical therapies, I am still taking Cialis. Although I plan to try kicking it at my 1-year anniversary, I must say I am enjoying sex like a teenager. Be confident that you have made a good choice.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words I am feeling better and better with my choice of Dr Patel I know no one wants to undergo this type of surgery but it sounds like he is a very compent surgeon and one of the best in his field. I am glad to hear you are doing so well and thanks again for the information.  I am on the forum for hours a day reading everything and trying to learn as much as I can before the surgery.  This forum is the best.
