How often are PSA tests required after surgery?

I just had my 6 month PSA and all is good.  the doctor said to come back in another 3 months.  I am happy to go back but here some doctor's don't require a PSA test for another 6 months?   Do you think this is just doctor's preference?

I would think being that being a gleason 8, that testing every three months would be wise for a couple of years. Just my opinion, some would disagree, but heck it is only a blood test, remember early detection is better even if it is recurrent. I say stay on schedule and get tested every three months.

thanks, dale. I will always keep the appointments. this is my 4th test in 6 months so every 3 months seems like a long time.

My doctor kept me on 3 months for the first year, then 6 months after that, until 3 years, then once yearly again. (I am fairly sure I will insist on 6 months for the rest of my life, when I get to that point).

I guess it just depends on your specific situation and your Doctor. I would go back as often as my Doctor wanted to keep an eye on it.

I agree with the others...given your age and gleason score keeping track of your PSA is very critical for the next couple of years. If it begins to rise then you can take action before it gets out of hand.

The usual protocol is every 3 months for a year, then twice a year for another year or two.  While some are going to yearly PSA testing after two years, I feel more comfortable getting tested every six months.   My cancer was detected early, and I want to catch it early if it recurs.
