Does hernia mesh exclude da Vinci?

 

Hi again,

I've been doing more reading and from what I can see, nerve sparing da Vinci looks like a possible option. The London Health Sciences Centre, LHSC (London, Ontario...near me) appears to have considerable experience...2 surgeons in particular. I believe they are made up of most of London's hospitals, including research, and are a very large teaching hospital network associated with UWO.

I haven't, as yet, found much info on their da Vinci successes (or otherwise). One gentleman responded to an earlier post that has was satisfied with this procedure there.

1) How many out there have had this procedure? Info or comments on successes/problems?

2) I have a hernia mesh, left groin. Will that affect this as a possible option?

I had a hernia mesh and because of that and a previous bladder surgery when young, the surgeon said there was a 50% chance he would have to abort the operation (da-vinci). The open presented the same risks. This was even after a CT scan of area. I ended up having a perineal prostectomy. Perineal worth looking into if you can find someone who still does a lot of them. Hope this helps.

I had a mesh hernia repair in 2002, and told my urologist about it before my da Vinci surgery, which was 10/07.

He said it wouldn't be a problem in my particular case and the surgery was completed successfully and without incident.

I suppose it's a case by case situation .

I had an inguinal hernia mesh repair about 5 years ago. My surgeon said because of the CT Scans and ultrasounds that there could be a problem. He had me sign a consent that if the daVinci couldn't do the job, he would do an open. But there was no problem and all was done via the daVinci.
