Terrible fires in Australia

Nothing to do with prostate cancer but I am sad to say that the bushfire toll in the Australian state of Victoria has hit 76 making it the worse bushfire toll on record. Another 10 victims are in a critical condition with 10 more having serious burns. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and the fires are wide spread and still raging. The really distressing part is that police suspect that a number of the fires were deliberately lit. My heart goes out to the families involved.

Bill, been following the story here in the States, it's a terrible situation, I think this AM I read of 88 dead and climbing. There's a special place in hell for arsonists I always say, since they enjoy playing with fire so much. May the families of the departed be comforted.

From first-hand experience, I can tell you there is no more terrifying experience than having the sheriff knock on your door at 1:30 AM and tell you that you have five minutes to gather your family and belongings and evacuate. We were fortunate, our home was spared in the October 2007 Califiornia wildfires, but only by 100 yards. We slept on the church floor for three nights. Our prayers and thoughts are with all those down under whose lives are endangered.

I have family in Victoria and went to school down there for a little while. My heart goes out to all of you and that beautiful country of yours. I wish I could send some of our Seattle rain your way.

Hi Bill,
Lana sent me a link yesterday. I have been watching. It is a terrible tragedy. Like I told Lana and CJ, I used to work through the fire lines in California. It is always some twisted mind that sets these fires. I have been keeping close to the set, my heart goes out to our Aussie brothers.

The toll is now 108 and expected to rise. The really shocking part of this disaster is that the majority of the victims were well prepared and knew what to do in a bushfire situation. Generators and pumps on hand, they knew to either get out early, well before the fire arrives and while the roads were clear, or if you stay, remain inside till the fire has passed. The problem was that the massive fire was not expected to hit these areas and was turned suddenly and driven by 60 m.p.h. winds. They had no time to react. So very sad.

Bill, it is such a terrible tragedy underway. about the worse way to have to die, I think. It is terribly sad, hope it abates very quickly.

Hi Bill, just heard the toll is 130, had a phone call from my daughter who lives in the mountain country in Gippsland, the fire was coming her way but the wind changed, thank God, this is terrible, we live in the bush here in Perth, and have had fires but not as bad as these in Victoria.
