What was not mentioned in this article is something that I have read elsewhere is that men who do get PCa after using Proscar have a higher incidence of a more virulent form. As noted by Steve the prevention rate does not seem to outweigh the risk... at least to me.

The one study that indicated finisteride with more agressive PC has been debunked many times, but still seems to hang around. Finistride kill the less aggressive prostate cancer cells so the more agressive ones are the ones that are left. Also the prostate is smaller so the same amount of samples will produce a higher end result. There is no indication that finistride promotes agressive cancer and there is a lot of evidence that it kill and prevents low grade PC that will eventually turn into high grade PC. It is used as maintenance in ATD3 as the third drug to prevent reoccurrance.

Hi John,

Thanks for the clarification. I knew that Proscar and Avodart were used as maintenance on hormone therapy so I did wonder why Proscar would be used if it promoted PCa. I assume that I will one day need one or the other of them and had my mind set on Avodart.
