My husband had open radical prostatectomy on 14 January 2009. The surgery was on Wednesday and he came home on Friday. Staples out after two weeks, catheter out after three weeks. He was dry the second night following catheter removal and only has an occasional leak when he exercises. His path report was great. All contained in the prostate, clear margins, nodes and vessels. He is extremely satisfied with the surgery and recovery process. His urologist said that he should be past the "leak" period in a month or two. Had first post surgery PSA 0.01 two weeks ago. His Gleason was 3+3=6 prior to surgery and prior to surgery his PSA was 1. That's right...1!!!! His pc was discovered almost by accident as he was actually seeing urologist to get some info regarding procedure for benign prostate enlargement! Thank goodness his urologist insisted on a full battery of tests from ultrasounds to biopsies! He has done very well, started wearing leg bag catheter 5 days after surgery and has been on the go since that time. He is a young 71 yrs old and other then having some soreness and bruising he really never complained! He was back to walking an hour a day one week out of hospital. What a guy!!! Loularkin, I would agree that you are married to a very young 71. Keep him active and these iron men last for many years. He has luck, a good doctor, ( plus a good woman) on his side as well. Perhaps you should mention the docs name and city. Congratulations.

That is an amazing story of a fast recoup from an open surgery. I am 56, and a little over 3 months out from mine, and there's no way I am quite his shape. Perhaps I need a transfusion from him. Real happy for the both of you, we love hearing good stories here.

Good report, thanks. I've been under the impression that open radical surgery requires a longer rehab time, longer than, say, the da Vinci procedure. Nice to hear you're both doing well.

Hi Lou,

This is wonderful news of a speedy recovery. My husband was also lucky to have such a pathway from  open Surgery 2 years ago. So glad you can now begin to reclaim your life after pc. Just one thing I noticed with my hubby... while buiding up to his normal activities he admitted (later) to being a little physically fatigued for up to 8-10 months after surgery, so I encouraged him to rest for a short time each day in first 6 months... mind you he then built a cubby house (with minimal help), 4 weeks after surgery too, so it is all individual!  cheers & happy days to you. Thank you all for the good wishes. This is a wonderful site with fantastic support. I might also mention that in 1963 hubby was burned in aircraft accident in France while serving in Air Force. 64% total surface...48% 3rd degree. He spent one year in Brook Army Hospital in San Antonio. He says radical prostatectomy..."a walk in the park!" haha Best wishes to everyone on a speedy recovery and continued good health!
