rulling question PSA Tests how often if at all

Whats the rule ? Radiation guys know that PSA's can jump around surgery guys know that no prostrate means zero.< readings are expected. Now what about the radiation surgery guys ?
And after changing labs how often should one get tested

mjr....I think by reading your stats...surgery at age 55 and then SRT (Salvage) at age 57 your question is how often should you be tested now. I would guess at least every year, unless your doctor has another protocol he uses. I would think that after radiation the first couple of tests would be at the six month mark and if all clear move to the yearly. Just a guess though on my part. Others will chime in shortly...

mjr, I would think Les is probably correct. I finished my Salvage RT in Jan. and my doc said he would pull a psa in 6 months. I suggested sooner but he said that you could get false readings in the time before that as the RT was still doing its thing. I may sneak one in early anyway...lol. How long has it been since your SRT and what was your stats before and after RP and Salvage? This is a nerve racking situation for myself and others I would venture to say. I am just going to enjoy the spring things like baseball, fishing and turkey hunting with my 12 year old son! Good luck to you and everyone else out there.

Hi mrj,

My Onc checked my PSA 6 weeks after salvage EBRT. He expected it to be down somewhat which would confirm that the target was hit. Mine went down by 50% (from.1 to .05) which seam to please the Onc. From now on I'll get the PSA tested every 6 month. Hope it continuous to go down.

I'm on a schedule of PSA testing every six months until 5 years after salvage radiation, then we'll check in annually after that.

I had HT with the salvage radiation, so my PSA dropped right away...don't know what the expectation would be for radiation only.   Good luck!

I would think, also, that every 6 months for at least 2 to 5 years.
