How to rate compounding pharmacies

I know that many of us here buy Tri/mix, Bi/mix and Caverject directly from compounding pharmacies.  One of best known recently made a serious mistake that cost the lives of several polo horses.  Actually supplying veternarians is the primary focus of most Compounding pharmacys.

To protect myself, I am trying to find out how compounding pharmacys are regulated and evaluated.  In other words, who do I contact besides my pharmacy to find if they have received the necessary clearance to assure they are doing things right ?  Is it state by state or what?

The Florida horse situation is really scary, I want to make sure my bi/mix is being made correctly.

  Well I answered at least part of my own question.  The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) appears to have a system of warning letters to various compounding pharmacies.  I don't see anything for Francks Pharmacy, the Florida formulator who was involved in the Polo horse tragedy.  http://www.wptv.com/media/news/6/6/1/661de744-fc99-4d30-8f90-9293909fa0a7/Francks_Pharmacy_Statement___4_23_09___FINAL.pdf

I remember several posters here who use Francks as their ED drug vendor.

International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP)
National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA)
Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA)
American Pharmacists Association (APhA)

these are the certifying organizations that Francks' say they belong to and adhere to their standards of use and care. A pretty impressive list, and consistent with what regular pharmacies and compounding pharmacies nationwide use. I'm sure you know that mistakes happen in any organization, it's just the occasional one that makes the news, if big enough. Nothing or any pharmacy is a sure safety guarantee, of course.

    James; Thanks for your prompt response.  Most of these phrmacys have been in business for years and years and are now faced with working to protect their reputations.  It's strange how seemingly unrelated actions come back to effect us.

  Actually I think Francks and most others do a very professional job.  They must all be on high alert right now due to the Florida problem.  I'm sure we will all be given safe and competent service.

Not all compound pharms do everything..such as mixing TriMix. Mine doesn't. They (Clark Prodessional Pharmacy) are FDA inspected and licensed to compound hormones among the other usual compounds.
If we wanted TriMix or BiMix we would need to head to a nearby town to a pharmacy that has the machine necessary for mixing the sterile solution...or something like that I was told. :>)
