Today was my 2 month followup after a 44 day regimen of external beam radiation. Suffice it to say the the last year has been quite an emotional experience. After being diagnosed last July (PSA 4.3, Gleason 3 + 3), I was certain that robotic prostatectomy was the best option for me. I never in a million years imagined that the surgery would have to be aborted because the surgeon (Dr. David Lee) ran into adhesions that made access to the prostate very difficult. After rethinking my options again, I chose radiation. My oncologist was Dr. Vapiwala at the University of Pennsylvania, and I must tell you that my experience was nothing short of amazing. I experienced almost no side affects from the radiation. Towards the end of the 44 day treatment I did have some bladder issues. But Flomax cleared those issues within a month. Sexual function is as good as (I even think better than) before. And so, we come to today where I was anxious awaiting my PSA result. When I learned that it was 2.5, I must admit I was disappointed. I expected it to be lower, but I understand that it may take up to 18 months for the PSA to drop to a negligible amount. Keeping the faith.

Greetings, Charlie. I think patience is the key word - while I don't have much experience with radiation I do understand it takes some time for the PSA to come down. Keep the faith - you have done the right thing and we'll all look forward to future reports of a lower and lower PSA. David

It sounds like you have had very good treatment and are on the road to recovery. Among the Philadelphia area doctors I talked to when choosing a surgeon, Dr. Lee was always mentioned near the top of the list so I would have confidence that his decision to abort the surgery was for the best. Univ of Pennsylvania has an excellent radiation oncology department and your experience supports this. (I didn't choose Dr. Lee or the Univ of PA health system, so I do not have a personal interest in this)
