Hi everyone, my last PSA was 0.6 from the same lab we have been using for 2 years, last week I had a random PSA frm the lab my GP uses and it came back 0.68, my GP is on holiday, was wondering if anyone knows the rule the second lab uses?

I have been told by two doctors to use the same lab if possible.  Different labs use different methodologies.  My PSA report always states what method was used to obtain the reading, such as the Dade Behring Enzyme Immunoassay methodology.  Also, to go from .6 to .68 may not indicate a trend but simply a difference in test methods.

I guesee your uro will clear it up for you.

Hi Theo, the second lab report says PSA result obtained using a third generation PSA assay on the Immulite 2500 (sensitivity 0.03 ug/L)

mal, as you indicate, it's all in the generation test used. If you have a true PSA of .68, a 2nd gen will report results rounded to .6, where a 3rd gen will give a .68. The older 1st gen test would report it as less than .1 if it was the same .68. So it's all in the testing. As it is, it is all very small amounts, so statistically any deviation in the procedure, such as calibration, method of getting sample, etc, will affect the result. That's why the docs want to use the same labs all the time, to be consistent.

I wouldn't get to caught up in the test generations. Certainly whenever possible try to get it from the same lab each time. No need for uneccessary worry...

I hope you are well...Spring is on the corner for you, time to get tuned up for the Lawn Bowls?

Thanks guys, will stick to same lab in future, less confusing, yes Tony, getting fired up for the upcoming competition season.

Hello Mal,

I too agree with the other's postings sentiments. The years that my psa was being checked by my GP, we used his lab only, which went down to .10 only. Once he turned me over to the urologist, been using his lab ever since, and they go down to .01. Sticking to one lab does cut down some psa anixiety. Best to you, brother.
