Side effects of Salvage Radiation

Starting IMRT salvage radiation after recurrence (rising PSA) after radical prostectomy, did have a positive margin (3+3=6) reported by pathology. Anyone have anything to share about the side effects or any actions than I need to do to help during the next two months of radiation?

My father had adjuvant radiation a few months after his RP and tolerated it extremely well. A few weeks into treatment he experienced diarrhea, but it cleared up with Imodium and I believe Metamucil. He was able to maintain his daily activities, including work and going to the gym. He did have pain doing sit ups, which the doctor explained was completely understandable :) Otherwise, the entire experience was better than any of us had imagined it would be. I hope you sail through your treatment without any side effects and that your PSA will remain forever undetectable. Keep us posted! All the best!

I just completed 37 IMRT treatments (July 31st). Had diarrea half way through. Immodium took care of that. Still take half a pill every three days or so. I also had a bladder neck constriction about half way through (difficulty urinating). Flomax took care of that. I took it for about a month after treatment (Drs. orders) I am also suffering a little fatigue after the fact. Other than that I did just fine. Everything is manageable. I also had a positive margin. The main thing is to maintain a positive attitude no matter what. Hope that answers some of your questions. There are a lot of us here who have been through it so don't hesitate to ask questions.

Boot, glad you made it through yours. Your side effects sounds along the line of what I have read about. You started your salvage radiation when your PSA was about the same as mine was last month. They are talking 35 treatments and 70 gy. Very similar.

How do you feel now?

Just finished 25 IMRT treatments. No problems. Most people take metamucil daily. Get a lot of excercise and fatigue won't bother you. I have had no side affects.

Second week of treatments here. So far, so good. No SE. I am scheduled for 40 zaps with 72grays total radiation (including 45 to lymph node area). My doc felt that with my high risk profile, he wanted to add HT into the mix. So, I had two months of ADT prior to start and will continue for another four. I join my voice to the folks above - may your treatment be uneventful and get rid of the PCa for good. Greg

I had 44 IMRT's and for the most part it was no problem. Did have some pelvic discomfort and fatigue but nothing major. I pray that this will blast the cancer out and you never have to deal with it again. Keep us posted.

I should be starting in a couple of weeks also. 39 sessions. It is comforting to hear from others who have already travelled this road.
