hey guys,

I posted here about a month ago, when my dad was first diagnosed with pca. Back then I was a nervous wreck. Today, from a totally different place, I give you an update, and a question.

Dad had his radical prostatectomy today, open procedure, not Davinci. The surgeon sent tissue samples of his lymph nodes for a pathology report, which came back negative. He also said his margins were good and the surgery proceeded without complications.

He'll be staying in the hospital until Friday. He first reported having some major pain after the surgery (7/10), but it subsided significantly after he took a nap. After 3 hours or so, he was joking with the nurses, asking for food, and harassing the doctor to let him go home early. The prostate was sent to pathology, the results come in on Friday.

His initial stats were:

PSA 5.26 Gleason 3+4=7
All blood work OK.
Bone scan, CT scan negative.

The surgeon's report was certainly reassuring, but based on your experiences, how likely is it that the cancer spread outside the prostate? I'm familiar with the statistics, but nothing like a personal experience to help clear some facts up!

This is hard to predict, but given your fathers numbers, it is likely they got there very early. He should have favorable results. After the pathology results Friday, healing will be his number one concern if all is well. But with somebody like you looking out for him, that appears favorable as well...

I'm glad to see that you are in a much better state of mind today.

Until you get the pathology report you should not be making any conclusions.  Help your Dad to rest and recover right now.  There are plenty of other things to think about.

Welcome back! Glad your dad made it through surgery and I hope and pray that today will be the start of his cancer free future. I agree with Dan, don't make any conclusions until you get the pathology report and even then....you never can turn your back completely. With that being said, enjoy that your dad is doing well and that he is on the road to recovery. Today is a big milestone!! Celebrate!! Keep us posted!

Nice to hear from you again. Glad your dad is now on the recovery side of things. Until the pathology reports comes back friends, no point worrying yourself or speculating.

I hope your dad continues to heal well, and continue on his path to recovery, and hopefully be cancer free.

The Sloan Kettering nomogram reports 96% cancer free at the ten year mark. But the Hans table (assuming t2a) shows has about a 12% chance of recurrence at 10 years. I don't know why there is such a difference. Anybody know?

Glad to hear the surgery went well.  As others have said, you can't really anticipate what the pathology report will say but all indications are your dad should get a good report.  It looks like his cancer was caught early. 

Right now he just needs to concentrate on getting well and recovering from surgery.  One of the most important parts of that recovery is a good support group.  It looks like he has that with all the good support you and hopefully others are giving him.

Great news about your father's successful surgery. The healing will take few days and within weeks he will be back to his normal activities. Hopefully, he will have minor incontinence issues that won't last long. Pleas post his pathology results when it comes out.
