PSA from 6.5 to 14.6 in two months

Dear All,

 

I’m a new member on this side and are seeking any helpful advice I can get.

In march 09 I started having problems  with urination, becoming very slow and frequent.

I saw Urologist , who checked the size of prostate which was slightly enlarged .

He prescribed  Omnic Ocas ( tamsulosinum-HCL) to see if my urination issues will lessen . They did , but as soon as I stopped using it , it all came back again.

In August I had my PSA checked and it was 6.5. Doctor , kept me on Omnic Ocas for additional two months to see where PSA will be .

I had PSA checked last week and it came out 14.6.

I’m travelling a lot for business, so I neglected all this issues a bit. Now I’m going to see urologist on Wednesday, after I informed him over the phone about this enormous increase.

I read a bit about the prostate cancer and how to read the PSA test results and was a bit confused about the free PSA and other reasons for this high PSA.

I guess next will be having biopsy testes done. What is a normal recovery  time and what discomfort can I expect. I know I’ll have to slow down if not stop my travel , but still.

 

I can’t wait for any response.

Welcome to Healing Well. The biopsy isn't that much a deal for MOST guys. Normally the biopsy is done with local numbing thruough the rectal wall. Most here report they were able to resume their normal schedule the next day. You may want to go home and rest/sleep for a few hours afterwards, I did. You can expect blood in the urine, stool and ejaculate for several weeks afterwards. Unless you have a really adverse side effect, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to resume normal activity at least the next day. AS I said, maybe even later the same day. If your psa is truly rising this fast, I suggest you don't delay, get the biopsy done as soon as possible, then come back here to us with the results. We're here to help in any way possible.

This is a question only trained medical professionals can hopefully adequately answer - someone who is familiar with you, your health history and the details of your test results.  What I do before visiting the Urologist or other specialist is to make a list on paper of the questions so I don't forget to ask them when I'm in front of them and feeling rushed.  Best wishes for a good outcome.

Everyone has a different experience with the biopsy. I had mine done one morning before work and except for a bit of blood in my urine had a fairly normal day after wards. Ask your doctor about the PSA results. How he reacts and answers your questions will help you decide if you want to continue using him as your doctor.

Yangica, I don't know what your mother tongue might be, but I assure you your English is ten thousand times better than I'd be in your language --- until I read the bottom of your post it hadn't occured to me that you might have been raised speaking a diffent language. For some years I have realized that being unilingual is a real handicap in the world. I only get to hear/read one point of view.

As for the biopsy, I drove over, had it done, and went back to work, and never thought about it until the results came in. The only discomfort was the needle with the anesthetic and it wasn't a big deal. Perhaps I had it easy.
