OK, had my surgery yesterday. I tried to post yesterday but our internet connection at the hospital is poor. Trying again now. (I don't see last night's post).

Frankly, I expected to have a MUCH easier time of it. I am in quite a bit of pain. I guess much of it might be due to the gas they use. Hard to say. All I know is that it is very hard to move.

However, I did take 3 short walks yesterday and 2 today. I want to get the heck out of here. I got no sleep -- it's tough being tethered. It will be easier when we get back to the apartment.

My surgery lasted a few hours longer than expected. That umbilical hernia at birth created more scar tissue than expected and he had to work through that.

But at least he THINKS all looks good. He BELIEVES it is organ-confined. He didn't see anything but of course the pathology will tell the story. He was able to do the nerve-sparing surgery.  He thinks it all went well.

Sonny -- I had my first fart at 9:30 AM today, so that won't be my first question.Not sure what to ask right now. I'm still in misery (unlike some of you!).

Hello Mel,

Glad to hear first hand from you. Sonny did an excellent job relaying your status to us. Pain is such a personal thing, you feel what you feel, just make sure you take what you need to deal with it, will make it easier for you. The walking is hard, but great for you, so important to make yourself with that type of operation. Sleep in a hopsital, lol, they bothered me constantly so sleep only came to me when they first pumped in strong pain meds, the rest of the time it was an endless line of people wanting to check this or that.

Shucks, you made me lose money on the fart question.

Hope you continue to do well. And yes, your pathology report will be the next major milestone to pass, and hopefully it will be all good.

Mel, Congrats on arriving! If you have pain and they offer meds, take them. No point in being "strong" right now - getting better is more important.

Mel it sounds like the surgery went well and I guess that hernia problem is something that occurs a lot. Glad you were able to post and hope you get home quickly and get some good rest. Please leave the gown at the hospital!

Great to hear from you. Sorry you have so much pain, but don't be reluctant to ask for pain meds if you want it. And it sounds like you do.

I bet the ranch on the fart question, Mel..........I'm now destitute. Sorry about the discomfort, but if it's the CO2 they blew you up with, the gas will pass! Glad you're through the surgery, and your verbal was a thumb's up!............slow & steady from here on out. Follow the advice of others before you...........I'm going to see about a loan so I can lay down a bet and recoup my money before you ask the next question.

Mel, welcome to the other side. Glad you made it, the rest will slowly improve. As one who didn't have the textbook easy recovery, I understand what you are saying and how you are feling. Hopefully in a couple days, your whole outlook will change, as you get past the immediate surgery phase. Right now, the best advice still is water, rest, walk, water, rest, walk, etc. Water to flush out the toxins, walk to regain some strength and work to get the gases out of the system. In the meantime, just suffer through. smilewinkgrin devil

I hope you are doing well and that he pain has eased. Getting that first fart is a great relief. Next comes the first bowl movement. Welcome to the other side.

Hi Mel - welcome to the other side, and hang in there (as if you have a choice), the pain will go away. At least you got to walk - I had some strange anatomy and lost a liter of blood with the daVinci - when I stood up to walk the first time I fainted, so they wouldn't let me try again that day. Wishing you the best, and thanks for posting.

Glad to hear the surgery is over and things look good.  Take the pain pills and relax you will be feeling better soon.

I too was in a lot more pain than they told me to expect.  It will go away.

And you will feel better once you get out of the hospital, if only because you can finally get some sleep.

Hi Mel,

Farts early on after surgery are a very good sign. Means the walking and other movement is getting the bowels working again...an important achievement at this time. Keep walking, keep farting and get stool softeners. The farts are telling you something...you'll be glad you had the softeners...

Mel - wishing you a good steady recovery - glad about the farts - sorry about all the pain - go for the pain medication - as the nurses said to me - "don't be brave - be comfortable "and the meds can help speed your recovery -

Congrats for being on the other side. You are an over achiever. It took me 2 days to fart and I couldn't eat solid foods until I passed gas.... It took about 4 or 5 days to go to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet so long my feet fell asleep. Get well. One thing I remember the doctor telling me is that I had major surgery so don't get impatient.

Welcome to the other side, Mel. I was a little paranoid when it came time to relieve myself. I took the stool softeners and ate prunes which made it much easier.

Thanks for all the nice responses. I am not a brave tough guy.  I only gut itout because I have a history of some horrible constipation problems when taking the drugs.

Iam taking the stool  softeners.

Oh, I am not at the apartment. We get the pathology report Tuesday.

Dr. Menon indicated there was a slight complication: scar tissue from an umbilical hernia (at birth). That turned a 3-hour surgery into a 4.5-hour one. But he said the delay did not impact anything. ONCE they got thru the scar tissue things went normally.

He did not find any problems. He THINKS it is organ-confined. He spared the nerves.

Hi Mel, good to hear you got rid of that nasty walnut and are on the mend. Walk, drink, take your pain meds. Then walk, drink and take the pain meds. Dr. Menon and his team have done a major assault to your body and it's not going to be happy with you for a few days. Make it happy. Walk, drink, take the pain meds.

I know you're a bashful kind of guy, but do keep in touch!
