How does a guy tell if he's had an orgasm when there is no ejaculation?

You get the same feeling you had before when you had ejaculation.

You still can have the same build up, and when "it" happens, you still have the same contractions and spasms in that area. It can take a guy's mind a while to get use to the "dry" part, because we associate orgasm with ejaculation. In my own personal case, I can honestly say that orgasms have become longer lasting and more intense then at any time before my prostate was removed. My natural sex urge has remained basically the same as before. This subject, of course, will vary greatly from guy to guy here. Good question though, and welcome here.

I find that the rapture of an orgasm is at least as good, if not better than when I had a prostate. At 71, I do need any ejaculation, nor does my wife. Besides, it is a great conversation starter when at a party, you whisper to a lady and ask her if she would like to see a dry orgasm.

I wish mine were dry. I just spurt urine with great force. I try to empty my bladder before hand, but there is always some ejaculated. I am nearly 12 months out from robotics and all other issues seem ok, some ed, but seems to be getting better. Will the urine spurt ease with time ?

There is no doubt that for me Orgasms are far more intense now than before. Its more than just a feeling, my penis moves in a quick pulsing motion from side to side, which it never did before

Best part, now is that after orgasm, my erection stays , and I can keep going, no recovery time needed whatsoever

The contractions feel the same. The real surprise is the ability to orgasm without an erection.
I thought wood was an integral part of the process. Now I see it was just going along for the ride.

Hello Fox,

You are new here, so I would like to welcome you to the site!  You have gotten some good answers to your initial question already, and so hopefully you've gotten an understanding of how the feeling of an orgasm is separate from the actual ejaculation of sperm/semen.

The responders here have a wide range of experiences with prostate cancer (PC)...testing, treatment, side effects, etc., and so if you have more questions please feel free to come back and ask more.

Are you, or someone you know, dealing with PC?

I get the urine spurt as well but it does seem to get better over time, also seems like orgasms are better, maybe becasue it requires more buildup.

My orgasms, although totally dry, are at least as good as pre-surgery. (It's pretty much the same, maybe better).

I can orgasm without an erection.

At this point, I can get an erection, but not at all serviceable.

Still, it doesn't bother me one bit. My main goal is beating this cancer (unfortunately, there will be no quick answer to that; I'll have to live from PSA test to PSA test, every 3 months at this time). The second goal was to be continent and that is achieved (a spurt here and there, no big deal).

74 years old / Gleason 3+4=7 / DiVinci 2/10/2010 / no pads / five week PSA was undetectable / orgasm's...I too get a tiny spurt of urine.

Your erection stays? How long does it last? Do you worry about the 4 hour thing? After we (wife and I) orgasm, we're ready for sleep. lol

you must realize by now, that the common theme here, is prostate cancer, and for any of us men that have had our prostates removed primarily by surgery, no longer have the physical means to ejaculate. so we have what is known as "dry orgasms", something most guys never have to think about in their lifetimes.

Welcome – we are here to help anyone with prostate cancer issues and that includes you.
As others have said, orgasm can happen without erection which, at least to us guys, is rather amazing. Orgasm may also be accompanies by some amount of urine leakage. You might want to remember that urine is sterile.

For those of us with ED there are other issues -- the “feedback” that we normally provide our partners is just not there. My wife wanted me to ask my Doc what she should read to learn how to make love to a post-surgical guy. His answer was; “She shouldn’t read anything! Your job (me, the guy) is to read yourself and then explain it to her.” It is a big change in our lovemaking but we are finding ways to work it out

I'll add a couple of things, so much accurate info has been shared.

Position for me is everything, if I am standing up or leaning I leak more urine. I stop drinking any liquids an hour before and clear my bladder before and take a time out to tap a kidney if we are trying out for the olympics.
One thing that helps with some old tricks is the use of a condum during certain activities where leakage is inappropriate.
Orgasm for me is the same and sometimes much improved.
Unfortunalty leakage for me is still unpredictable at times. I recently got put on blood pressure medication and I attribute that to some difficulities.

Orgasm will be different
Sex will be different
But different does not mean worse.

At first my orgasm seemed so like it had before, muscle contractions etc that I thought I was still ejaculating, it was only by looking at things that I could see that I was not.

I had a big problem with urine leaking out during sex. Tried condoms with some success. Also, not just went to bathroom before sex, but went every five minutes during sex - a bit annoying to break the spell etc to do that but was able to pee something each time which helped.

Others have reported having sex in the shower when there has been urine leakage or using extra towels etc in the bed.

Things will change over time. I am for instance more or less dry all through sex now, and my erection varies a bit in side and firmness; my trouble now is that orgasms are now almost non existant, or more accurately thery've been replaced by a sudden pain in the area the prostate used to be. However as I am trying to deal with this problem on the basis of "practice makes perfect" things are not that bad.

A lot of people mention urine when they have sex or orgasm. I am not sure if that is the norm, that may be linked to incontinence and likely will subside, many people I spoke to and myself are completely dry during sex and orgasm

Urinating before sex is a great idea but thats always been a great idea

Dry orgasms are by far a great improvement in my book, 1st much less Tide usage, second spontaneous sex away from home is much neater

I WISH I HAD DRY ORGASMS!!!!!  I ejeculate urine with such force that I can hit the ceiling with a good orgasm.  I ejeculate urine with more force without my prostate, then I ejeculated seman with my prostate. 

I am 3 years post op and I have seen no improvement in my ejeculating urine.  I am dry other wise and don't use pads, and I have no ED issues and can get a rock solid erection without drugs, but it is this dam urine ejeculation that is so frustrating.  Even if I try to void my bladder right before sex, I still will ejeculate some.  My uro said this is a side affect of surgery most doctors don't tell you about, but it is quit common.  My uro said that if you get some urine inside your partner, there is nothing to worry about because urine is sterile.  Try telling that to a woman!!!

Hi Foxie,
By now I think you've learned a lot (maybe even more than you wanted to know) about orgasm.
the important take away from this is that the orgasm still fells good for the guy even though
1) there is no semen squirt
2) there might not be even a hint of an erection
3) there might be some urine.
4) even without an erection, a premature orgasm is possible.

I'm a guy and managed to be 56 years old without knowing the above facts.
