June 8th, 2 days after my catheter was removed, I went to my local Randall's (Safeway) to re-stock on 'foods with flavor', hehe. Same thing at checkout - nice lady I have seen there often asked if I would like to donate for PC. I thought about it for a millisecond and offered $100. (I don't have a lot of $100's). She asked, 'Are you sure?', and I explained I was just out of PC surgery 9 days before, and wished I could do more.
She turned her head, and when she turned back, tears were in her eyes. She left the register and walked around to me. She then gave me a long, strong hug and said her dad passed away from PC 12 years ago. I tried to be strong, but my chest heaved a couple of times as I hugged her back, saying nothing.
That hug was meaningful and unforgettable - so soon after the surgery, and from a relative stranger at that. The extended family of those who have been affected by PC is everywhere, and sometimes in places you don't expect. Let's all support this family in any way we can, and for as long as it takes.
