My husband (52) is six weeks post op from DaVinci surgery. His doctor was very pleased with the surgery and said it was one of the best nerve sparing surgeries he's seen. He is still having some leaking, but not too much and nothing in the erection department at all. What is concerning me right now though is some very severe side/hip pain he's been having for the past week. He describes it as feeling like a)a sunburn or b)being scraped down the side. Is this something that anybody has experience with? He went to his regular Urologist and was told it's just some nerve trauma and it will get better, but it seems to just be getting worse. I don't know if it's related to the surgery or if it happened while doing some minor yard work that he probably shouldn't have been doing anyway. Anybody have any ideas?

we welcome you and your husband to HW Prostate Cancer. Glad you found us. Pains like you describe can be very typical this close to surgery, and can manifest themselves in many different areas of his body. He has been through a major, complex, and invasive surgery. Six weeks out really isn't that far so far, so it may take time to heal and sort itself out. His doctor is probably right, just too soon yet, same as with the leaking and especially the ED department. Even with nerve sparing ops, 6 weeks is way too soon for most men to have any indication of what is going on in that department.

good luck to the both of you, and i sincerely hope that he continues to heal well. has he had his post surgery pathology report back yet? if so, did it read well for him? Next major event will be his first post surgery PSA test. please keep us posted of his condition and his recovery.

Yes definitely had odd aches and pains like you describe. I put some of it down to sleeping/sitting in different positions etc

It is also the case that the position you have to lie in for 4 hours or so for the surgery can put pressure on various parts of the skeleton which in turn can press against nerves. So once again it's an area where exercise/walking can help. And why not try a gentle back massage.

But, as ever, it's something to mention to the doc again if it doesn't go away.

Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease. I don't know all the numbers, but they said that his post surgery pathology report couldn't have been any better. He goes back for a follow up in September.

Those pains are all too familiar. Mine were slightly forward of the hips. Felt external rather than internal. The only relief I got was medicated powder twice daily. Went away for good just recently.

It's been getting worse. My husband called his regular Urologist (not the surgeon) and he wants him to come in for a cat scan. They are afraid something might be wrong. I'm afraid he started doing too much too soon and the stitches putting the urethra back together tore. I hope he's not leaking internally. If he has to have surgery again and a catheter again it will not be pleasant around here.

Lets hope that it is not that serious, but by all means have it checked. I have had two CT Scans since surgery that showed nothing, so all I have to show for that is all the radiation from 2 CT's. Yuk. Hope this heals soon for your husband.

The weight limits that most surgeons give their patients are critically important to follow, so "doing" to much after such a major, complex surgery could be problematic. I hope that he hasn't hurt himself. I had open surgery, and I wasn't allowed to lift more than 5 lbs for the first 6 weeks, wasn't allowed to drive for over a month, etc.

Hopefully the scan won't show anything too drastic, please let us know.

I was on a 5 pound lift limit for two months, then 10 for another month.
Driving was out for a month, then when he said I could, it was with caution - went with a friend to a big parking lot to be sure I could actually do it without pulling something. I drove to friends (40 mile round trip) for Thanksgiving (1 month out), and wasn't sure I was going to get home. Longest, most painful drive since colon surgery.

Then I packed off for a 5 hour drive at Christmas (2 months out), that took the prize for the worst drive in history.

He was allowed to drive after two weeks. A few days after getting the catheter out, he was doing yard work while I went out to the store. I gave him hell afterward. He has been somewhat achy ever since that. Some days he's fine and other days he is in a lot of pain. I'll keep you posted.

I think for your sake, you should ask the doctor for a copy of the biopsy, the pathology report and the surgical report. These are handy to have. It would also help us if you put them in a signature on yoiur profile.

Then when you say what is going on, we can look at your biopsy and post surgery biopsy to see if we see any thing that could be problematic.

The sunburn or scrape decription certainly sounds like nerve related issues. You would certainly know by know if you were leaking urine.

Take a deep breath, have him take some mild pain relievers like tylenol, and wait to see what the doctor says.

We have all the reports. The doctor said that his results couldn't have been any better. I'll figure out all the details and add to my signature when I have a chance. I'm going through my own medical issues right now. I have a torn ACL and surgery scheduled for Friday. When it rains, it pours!
