My treatment included the IGRT (image guided radio therapy) and the IMRT (intensity modulated radio therapy) and the machine was simply Varian. When I asked if this was the Trilogy I was told "no" that the Trilogy was aimed at treating all cancers and was not necessary for the prostate and the machine for my treatment was identical in all other aspects.
I underwent 45 sessions. Preparation included placement of three gold seeds known as fiduciaries. These are used to map and guide the radiation beam. After the seeds are placed I had a CT scan that located the seeds and this was used to plan the treatment. This was about one week prior to start of the treatment.
I also received tattoos on either hip and stomach areas. Just tiny black dots that are barely visible and only then if you know where to look. The tattoos were used to align the table and beam prior to commencing the treatment session. I also was fitted with a wire mesh mold that kept me in the same position for each treatment. Prior to the start of the radiation the machine would make an orbit and align the table and the beam. If something changed during the treatment I would feel a minor adjustment in the table. Only happened once. After the machine was satisfied with my location and had a fix on it the radiation dosing would begin. At each of seven stations the head would stop and fire the radiation. I could hear the collimeters reposition each time prior to the buzz of the radiation. Pretty cool technology. Only took about twenty minutes from start to finish.
I suffered only brief diarrhea and urinary discomfort from the treatment. Both cleared up within days of the final treatment. I also had some minor skin irritation and lost all pubic hair. Hair has come back. I do have erections but not anything to brag about. I do not have a partner so I have not tried the ED drugs. In general I am satisfied with the treatment.
Best to you,
Don
