If we just tell him: Good choice and good luck, we are doing him a disservice. We need to give him our honest opinion the best we can. A good doctor/surgeon will not object if the patient is not ready, even the day before surgery.
I read a number of posts on this site and on the Friday before my Monday surgery, at my pre-op meeting with the surgeon, I told him I did not want to do surgery on Monday and would like to revisit my options. He told me that was OK and he put my surgery on hold until I get back to him later. We then went through all my options: AS, radiation, surgery, open and robotic, etc. He then went through his statistics with me again and discussed the likely outcome of my surgery. Finally, I asked him what would he had done if he were me. His answer was typical, he said he would do surgery. Then he told me his father had prostate cancer at 75 a few years back and he told his father to go the robotic surgery route (with another surgeon). I asked him why and he said that in his opinion, in the hand of a top surgeon, surgery still provided the best chance of a cure and the least complication.
I went home, re-check my options, re-look at the list of surgeons and radiation oncologists I had on hand and finally I was ready and called him back to go ahead with surgery on Monday. Thanks to this site and the postings, I became better informed and more comfortable with my decision after a lot more thoughts.
