Dilaudid for bone pain

My husband has had terrible pain in his arm (he has mets in his shoulder). He had been taking t3's , but they were only working about 2 hours and than the pain was back. Had to take him into emergency today and the doctor said it's time to switch to something stronger he was put on dilaudid. He took it , but took 2 mg and didn't work in one hour took another 2mg and took a good hour before started to work. We have a call into his oncologist and are hoping they may do radiation to help the pain as he had it in his leg and has had no pain in his leg since. I was wondering if anyone out there is in the same situation and could give us any tips for pain management.

Hi Mary here,

Willie was in dreadful pain from compression fractures and was given long-acting morphine 60mg, twice a day.

He also had short acting morphine for break-through pain, as needed.

Before that, he was on Oxycontin but it did not work well for Willie.

He's had one treatment of Taxotere, chemo, and his pain is less than half of what it was.....seems the chemo has reduced it?!

I hope you can get the oncology resident on call asap and get some pain relief for your husband soon.

2 mg of anything seems like a very small dose to me......try 10 mg or call your local hospital for advice.

Fentanyl is a VERY powerful pain reliever. Its a synthetic opioid, addictive, Comes in time release patches of different strengths. it works when nothing else does..I would ask about it...

I was on dilaudid for a while last year when I was in one my long term pain periods, I found it wasn't as strong or as effective when I took it in pill form, as it was when I was on it with an IV administering the same drug. On the IV, took away all the pain but in pill form, it took over an hour to start working and didnt find it as effective as a 10/500 Loratab to be honest

Thanks everyone: He finally got some relief had taken after taking a 3rd pill and 2 t3's . His Doctor is awesome as phoned her and she told him to take the 3rd pill and the t3's and than called back 2 hours later to see how he was doing. This is his GP. We are hoping to see his Oncologist this week, but not sure as it's tough to get into see him, but at least he has something to help for now. His GP said he should of been a little loopy after the 3rd pill, he wasn't at all didn't even make him sleepy, but thank goodness it helped with the pain.

Kak, I noticed you posted that your husband is now on morphine and am hoping that it's helping him cope with the bone pain.

Good luck with his upcoming chemo treatment as well.

Thanks. He is doing better just feeling very tired and achy. I assume this is from the medication.
