hello:

I was just cruisin' the amazon.com book site looking at cost of buying the Patrick Walsh book and stumbled on the "Prostate Cancer for Dummies" listing...
shocked
- not meaning to start a rumble -
idea
- but do you guys/gals have a best / worst book on Prostate Cancer?

I haven't read many books, but I would vote for the Walsh book as the best. As for the worst -- I've forgotten the title but it did advocate coffee enemas and had equally wacky ideas about diet.

I have read the Dummies book, and thought that was OK, although the level is much more basic than Walsh.

Yup that one's been around a bit.

The "For Dummies" group has done a good job over the years of getting basic stuff out there.

Kinda funny...but they do sell.

I have 5 of them, Walsh's is still the best because of its detail..Gerald Chodak's Winning the Battle book is very good too and is up to date..You can find them all on eBay for a fraction of the cover price..

I browsed thru the that book in the book store and like piano thought it was ok to good. The information was factual and mainstream. Obviously The dummy part is a marketing device, a successful one, at that. You won't be an expert on the the subjects they cover , but for general knowledge I 'd recommend it!

I don't have a bad book. Walshes book was my and is my favorite, Liked Scardino,s and want to get Strums and Meyers. I usually just read the portions that relate to what I think are my issues. I, m still thankful, that while PCA is a devastating and wily disease and can cause havoc on the lives of those who have it, from a mortality point of view......

The first  book I read after being diagnosed was the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide to Prostate Cancer by Bostwick et al.  I haven't looked at it since then, but when I read it, having just found out I had PCa, I found it really helped me get a grasp of what was happening to me.  I think it dates to about 2005, but maybe it has been updated since then.  The Walsh book I read was an earlier version which was hopelessly out of date, but obviously the current edition is highly thought of.

the one I ordered from amazon for $11.55 was - Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer, Second Edition [Paperback] - 2007...

- should get it in a couple of weeks - cheaper to buy it online from an USA distributor than in book store in Canada ( regular price + 13% HST)

what are you full medical credentials? you are borderline already being in violation of Rule 20 here at HW, have you cleared yourself with either the moderators or the owner of this site? This is a patient to patient site.

Best books I've read on prosate cancer:

(1) Walsh
(2) Scardino

Worst book I've read on prostate cancer:

Intoxicated by My Illness (a memoir by Anatole Broyard, who died from prostate cancer)

Just a note, my post was posted prior to the the moderators edit. If the edit was there I would not have posted. I go by the dictum that just because your paranoid, doesn't mean they aint out to get you!!
